X owner, future US government appointee, and internet pariah Elon Musk can add a new gaming related accolade to his list of accomplishments as the tech magnate has allegedly become the top Diablo IV player on the planet.
Late on Thursday evening (Nov. 21), a new entry to the unofficial Diablo 4 Pit Leaderboard was recorded under the name “Resistance” with a US location. This is reportedly Elon Musk’s character, who now sits number one on the 1,000 person leaderboard rankings – impressive considering Diablo IV’s player count numbers in the hundreds of thousands.
Elon Musk Hits Number One On Diablo IV Leaderboard
The Pit, one of Diablo 4’s hardest dungeons, is widely regarded as the ultimate challenges in Diablo IV and Musk’s character completed the run in just 1.59 minutes, almost 10 seconds faster than the previous top time.
Musk had called his shot earlier this month on the Joe Rogan podcast, where he claimed to be “one of the top 20 Diablo IV players in the world.” However, his position on the Diablo 4 Pit Leaderboard was quickly compromised.
Then it appears Musk went into the lab and locked in, uploading the verification video on Nov. 3, before its eventual confirmation earlier this week. Now, Elon’s Spiritborn is character sits at the top of the leaderboards.
What Does the Diablo IV community Think of Musk’s Achievement?
Community reaction to the feat has been a mix of derision and apathy. Across the r/diablo4 subreddit, people have pointed out both that Musk likely uses RMT (Real Money Transactions) to boost his character, and possibly even other methods beyond that, including boosting.
For example, Reddit user EarthsfireBT pointed out:
“2 weeks into the season he was on Rob’s (Rob2628) stream. Musk had 200hrs playtime on his Spiritborn and had 2-3ga legendaries and 3-4ga uniques. That should tell you everything you need to know.”
GA Legendaries and Uniques are some of the rarest pieces of gear in Diablo IV.
As there’s only 336 hours in two weeks, this would mean that Musk would have done nothing but play Diablo, eat and sleep for almost the entire duration.
Musk is the CEO of multiple companies, a prodigious Twitter/X poster, and spent much of that time period (Oct. 8 – Oct. 22) campaigning in Pennsylvania as part of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. As a result, it seems almost impossible for him to have sunk that much time into the game without some kind of RMT or boosting service.
Beyond this, Musk also made the claim on the same Rogan podcast to be one of the best Quake players in the world, a claim that was quickly disproved.
As a result, we’re left with questions over the veracity of Musk’s record, and wondering which game the head of the future Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will attempt to reach the apex of next. Personally, I hope it’s Dota 2 – I’d love to see an Immortal Rank Dota player with government credentials.
