LoL seems to be finally getting voice chat. During a dev update from the Chinese team, Riot Games teased that ‘team voice chat’ is an upcoming feature. This was one of many topics briefly touched upon in their 13th anniversary for the Chinese region.
The news came on Sep. 7 during an official Riot Games video posted on the Chinese social media platform BiliBili. Xiao K from the League of Legends Chinese server operations team kicked off the video, going through what fans can expect in due course, probably the most exciting being team voice chat in LoL. “In addition, this year, we have some upgrades in product experience that everyone will witness, including the upcoming team voice feature.”
While this has only been mentioned briefly in one video, Riot’s mention of voice chat is a big deal. Voice chat has been an excluded feature in LoL since its release despite the fanbase’s desire to have it. VALORANT, Riot’s tactical shooter, had this feature in from the start. With so many competitive games having voice chat, one could understand if League of Legends players felt left behind. Riot did introduce a party voice chat system many years back, but this only meant you could chat with friends you’ve queued up with, not random players you’ve just met.
This wouldn’t be the first time the Chinese region has gotten an exclusive first glance. VALORANT mobile is currently in its beta testing stage and is exclusive to the region. In addition, the reported TCG, Rune Battlegrounds, is only expected to launch in China, with Riot having no immediate plans for a global release.
