One of Premier League’s most high-profile teams, Manchester United, has launched web3 fantasy soccer game Fantasy United, alongside new collectible NFTs for the 2024/25 season.
Featuring all first-team male players, the cards come in the shape of Classic, Rare, and Ultra-Rare editions. The cards change according to real-time stats throughout the season, based on players’ goals, assists, tackles, and saves.
In Fantasy United, the cards are used to build five-man squads, which earn the holders points based on their dynamic stats through mini-leagues spanning across the season, starting with the Premier League opener against Fulham on 16th August.
Building on Manchester United’s long-term sponsorship with the Tezos, Fantasy United will deploy on the Tezos blockchain.
As part of the collaboration, the two launched the inaugural 7,777 strong NFT collection The Devils in 2022. Devils-holders have been given early access to the game, but as of 31st July, everyone will be eligible to play. Player packs are sold in packs of seven to the cost of £3 ($4). For those looking to hand-pick specific players, individual cards are available to buy via Tezos’ secondary marketplace Objkt.
“Player Trading Cards allows United fans to collect the whole men’s first team squad, to see those collectibles evolve throughout the season as games are played and goals are scored, and have the ability to play those cards in a exciting fantasy football game,” commented Manchester United director of digital innovation Ronan Joyce.
Tezos head of culture at Trilitech Sunil Singhvi added, “Player Trading Cards and Fantasy United is an innovative use of blockchain technology to enable United fans to have a deeper connection with their favourite club.”
“Through dynamically updating collectibles, supporters will be able to cheer on their heroes and watch how the season develops.”
