Blizzard Entertainment is developing a mobile version of Overwatch. This report comes from Jason Schreier’s new book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment.
In the book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, veteran Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier unloads all the intriguing details after interviewing more than 300 current and former Blizzard employees. From the massive layoffs to the controversies and lawsuits that rocked the company, Schreier jumped headfirst into with Blizzard’s rollercoaster ride history. And yes, even Overwatch gets a share of the spotlight.
Leadership and Development for Overwatch Mobile
Among other things, Jason Schreier’s book Play Nice contains information about the Overwatch mobile project. It reveals that Walter Kong, who previously led the development and content updates for Overwatch 2, is now in charge of the mobile version as its General Manager. This shift shows Blizzard’s interest in making the mobile version stand out from its lineup.
Gameplay and Heroes Expectations
There is no official information about the game mechanics or about the hero lineup, but the speculation suggests that players will have the original Overwatch hero lineup potentially including up to 12 heroes at launch. Since Overwatch has added a lot of Heroes into the game over time, the mobile version may include more heroes so as to give the feel and look of the game right from the start of play.
Overwatch Mobile Release Date
As of now, there is no information on when the game will be launched on mobile devices. Considering that this project is at its early stage, it will probably not be launched before 2025.
This is also indicator of Blizzard’s interest in growing the company’s footprint in the mobile gaming sector, which has recently seen an exponential growth. And with no premium hero shooter title since Apex Legends Mobile was closed down, Blizzard finds itself with a wide-open field to score big in Overwatch Mobile.
