After months of rumors Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro), an upgrade to their PS5 series of consoles. Described as a mid-gen refresh, the PS5 Pro was revealed by Sony’s lead PlayStation architect Mark Cerny during a technical presentation on Sep. 10.
With a larger GPU, faster RAM, and a host of new features, the PS5 Pro is seen as a way to enhance and upgrade the PS5 for modern performance standards.
Utilizing AI upscaling with PSSR, targeting a consistent 60fps on all games, and enough capacity to offer a distinct visual improvement from the base PS5, the PS5 Pro is a step up indeed.
But what’s also a step up is the price point: $699 as reported by Sony themselves.
While it’s easy to balk at this price, you have to remember that a PC with similar specs to this would probably easily run double that price, although patient buyers could find deals.
PlayStation 5 Pro Specs – PS5 Pro details
- 67% GPU Capacity Increase from PS5
- Dedicated Ray Tracing Acceleration
- AI Upscaling with PSSR
- 60FPS as standard
- 2TB SSD
- DualSense wireless controller included
- Astro’s Playroom pre-installed
A blog by PlayStation also revealed that dozens of games that are already releases will receive enhanced features. These include Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, lan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2,, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.
Overall, some consumers may be put off by the huge price, and suggestion that the PS6 might be almost half a decade away from release. But as a mid-gen upgrade, and an alternative to a fully fledged gaming PC the new console looks like a good investment.
