AVAX rebounds 7% as Grayscale and Franklin Templeton join network

Avalanche’s AVAX token surged nearly 7% to around $25 following the announcement that major institutional firms — Grayscale and Franklin Templeton — were expanding their products to the blockchain network’s ecosystem.

The price increase helped reverse the recent downtrend for AVAX, which has fallen 20% over the past month amid broader market stagnation. Despite the recovery, the token is still down 82% from its all-time high of over $145 in November 2021, according to CryptoSlate data.

However, Avalanche continues to stand out among large-cap blockchain networks, playing a crucial role in the adoption of real-world asset (RWA) tokenization through strategic partnerships.

AVAX Fund

On Aug. 22, Grayscale announced the launch of the Avalanche Trust, a crypto investment fund offering investors direct exposure to AVAX. The trust mirrors Grayscale’s existing single-asset investment products and focuses exclusively on AVAX.

Grayscale Head of Product & Research Rayhaneh Sharif-Askary highlighted the launch as a significant expansion of the company’s crypto offerings.

She noted that Avalanche has been pivotal in advancing RWA tokenization through the network’s unique “three-chain smart contract platform designed to simultaneously optimize for scalability, network security, and decentralization.”

Over the past month, Grayscale has broadened its product lineup, introducing new trusts for several crypto, including the DeFi protocol MakerDAO, the decentralized AI project Bittensor, and the layer-1 blockchain network Sui.

Franklin Templeton expands to Avalanche

Similarly, leading asset management firm Franklin Templeton has expanded its on-chain money market fund — Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund (FOBXX) — to the Avalanche network, according to an Aug. 22 announcement.

The fund offers dividends from yields on US Treasury assets while keeping a stable price of $1 per share. Investors can buy shares through the Benji Investments platform, where each BENJI token equals $1 in FOBXX shares.

Roger Bayston, Head of Digital Assets at Franklin Templeton, said:

“Bringing the Benji platform to the Avalanche network further expands access to our first-of-its-kind tokenized money market fund. We look forward to working with Avalanche’s vibrant developer community to bring new blockchain-enabled innovations into the market.”

Launched in 2021, FOBXX became the first money market fund to use a public blockchain for recording transactions and ownership. According to Dune Analytics data, the fund is the second-largest US securities tokenization platform, with a market cap of $420 million.

Off The Grid completes first playtest on PS5

What appears to become the first blockchain game to launch on console, Off The Grid, has completed its first playtest. While initially announced for Xbox, the opening test was on PlayStation 5.

The game is deployed to developer Gunzilla Games’ gaming subnet Gunz which is built on L1 Avalanche.

Following the playtest, Avalanche posted on X claiming that over 30,000 players joined the action, generating a total of around 400,000 transactions on Gunz. Players were also incentivized by various freebies in the process.

As for the game itself, it’s a highend battle royale thirdperson shooter – also featuring a 60 hour single player mode – in which the in-game character’s cybernetic limbs are swappable and tradable NFTs.

Additionally, there will be lots of customizable weapons that can already be traded on the game’s mobile wallet, which runs using the GUN token. Worth noting however is the token is not yet live external to the app.

More than four years in the making, Gunzilla has raised over $100 million for Off The Grid. When the game will officially launch is yet to be revealed.

Avalanche anticipates ‘most bullish unlock’ amid broader market $1 billion in token release

Token Unlocks data shows that several crypto projects—Avalanche, Wormhole, Aptos, Sandbox, Arbitrum, Optimism, and others—are set to unlock tokens valued at about $1 billion in August.

Approximately $260 million will be released in the first three days of the month.

Crypto projects frequently plan token unlocks to control asset supply and prevent market oversaturation. This gradual release helps avoid significant sell-offs by early investors or team members holding large quantities of the crypto asset.

Wormhole, Avalanche to release over $400 million worth of tokens

The largest unlocks this month will come from Wormhole and Avalanche.

On Aug. 3, Wormhole, a cross-chain messaging protocol, will release 600 million tokens worth $151.67 million, constituting 33.33% of its circulating supply.

Avalanche will follow on Aug. 20, unlocking 9.54 million AVAX tokens valued at approximately $251 million, representing 2.42% of its circulating supply.

Token Unlocks dashboard shows that 4.5 million AVAX worth $118.53 million will go to the Avalanche team, 2.25 million AVAX worth $59.27 million to strategic partners, and the remainder will be allocated to the Foundation and as airdrops.

Farid Rached, the former Ecosystem Growth Manager at Avalanche, pointed out that this planned unlock would be the most bullish in its history because “it is the last major one for team and public/private investors.”

Other major unlocks

Sui, a layer-1 network, will unlock 64 million tokens valued at $50 million, representing 2.56% of its circulating supply on Aug. 1.

Similarly, the decentralized exchange dYdX will release 8.33 million tokens worth nearly $11 million, amounting to 3.65% of its circulating supply. These tokens will be distributed to investors, founders, staff, and future employees.

Aptos will unlock 11.31 million APT tokens worth $74.64 million on Aug. 12. These will be allocated among the Aptos Community, Core Contributors, Foundation, and Investors, with Core Contributors receiving the most significant share—3.96 million APT valued at $26 million.

On Aug. 14, Sandbox will release 205.6 million SAND tokens worth $66.75 million. This release will be divided among the team, advisors, and a company reserve.

Finally, Ethereum’s layer-2 networks Arbitrum and Optimism will collectively unlock over $110 million worth of tokens by Aug. 16 and Aug. 31, respectively.

Konami working with Ava Labs to build Resella NFT network on Avalanche

Japanese gaming company Konami is collaborating with Ava Labs to build its own Avalanche subnet.

Called Resella – check out the Japanese website here – the new blockchain is described as an NFT-solution for developers looking to adopt blockchain technology for their platforms.

Although it doesn’t seem to be a gaming network per se, Resella will essentially enable both web2 and web3 developers to integrate NFTs and set up a marketplace in their apps. This includes third party developers.

Apart from games, the official announcement also mentions “social experiences” and “diverse services”. In addition, Konami hopes to add more utility to existing game NFTs which could potentially serve as event tickets or shop vouchers, and more.

Initially it will target the Japanese market, by facilitating transactions in Japanese Yen.

More details about Resella will be released on 5th July during Japanese crypto conference IVS Crypto 2024.

Luna Foundation moves $95 million in crypto to new wallet citing enhanced security

The Luna Foundation Guard (LFG) has transferred approximately $95 million in crypto to a new wallet, aligning with recent plans to enhance fund security.

On-chain data from blockchain Arkham Intelligence showed that the Foundation shifted 1.974 million Avalanche’s AVAX token, valued at $71.2 million, and 39,500 BNB, approximately $23.5 million, to a new address identified as “0x13463Aab3ECcE77Cfd8Cc28fA498a5F9DB242e27” earlier today, May 31. The wallet received its initial test transactions from the Foundation on May 17.

Despite these transfers, LFG’s reserve dashboard shows that the foundation still holds approximately $161 million. This includes $71.36 million in AVAX, $45 million in UST, $23.38 million in BNB, and about $21 million in BTC, among other assets.

LFG is a non-profit organization focused on the Terra ecosystem. In 2022, the Foundation was intensely scrutinized for its Bitcoin transactions during Terra’s algorithmic stablecoin UST crash.

Why did the Luna Foundation make the transfers?

In a May 28 social media post, LFG said it was moving some assets in its multi-sig wallets to a more secure direct custody solution. It stated:

“To enhance security of LFG funds, LFG is set to transition assets held in LFG multi-sig wallets to a robust direct custody solution in the coming days.”

So, the new transactions follow the announcement and involve the wallet the Foundation previously stated.

Meanwhile, this development follows the reported agreement between the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), bankrupt Terraform Labs, and its former CEO, Do Kwon.

While details of the settlement remain sketchy as of press time, Judge Jed Rakoff has asked both the financial regulator and the defendants to submit supporting documents by June 12. In April, a US District Court for the Southern District of New York found the defunct company and its founder, Kwon, guilty of civil fraud.

Elixir launching Robokiden arena shooter on Avalanche in July

Blockchain game distribution platform Elixir has announced it’s acquired the Project ST IP from Spanish developer The Breach Studios.

Now known as Robokiden, the 5 player team-based thirdperson shooter will be launched in July as part of Elixir’s $1 million season pass rewards campaign. It’s also planned to release the games for consoles including PlayStation5, Xbox and Switch.

It will use the KIDEN token as a reward, which will be used to buy loot boxes and NFTs.

In conjunction with the deal, Elixir has also announced a strategic partnership with Ava Labs, the outfit behind the Avalanche blockchain, which will see Robokiden adopting Avalanche.

“Our goal at Elixir has always been to bring engaging and innovative IPs to our platform, which is why we’re incredibly excited to bring Robokiden to our community,” said Elixir CEO Carlos Roldan.

“By partnering with Ava Labs, leaders in the development of web3 tech specifically designed for gaming, we can’t wait for players to start diving into this vibrant arena shooter.”

Aevo and Pyth lead May’s $3 billion crypto token unlock wave

The crypto market will experience its second token unlock of over $3 billion for this year in May, according to Token Unlocks data.

Token unlocks involve the gradual release of coins initially held to discourage early investors or team members from rapidly selling their large-volume holdings. This process has consistently wielded considerable influence over the broader market conditions by amplifying the selling pressure on a digital asset.

Pyth, Aevo leads with over $1 billion unlock.

Two major players, Aevo and Pyth, lead the significant May token unlock, each set to release over $1 billion worth of tokens.

Aevo is gearing up to release 827.6 million tokens valued at $1.257 billion, marking an astounding 758% increase in its current supply. This unlock is slated for May 15.

Furthermore, the Layer-2 DEX roll-up will release 6.13 million AEVO tokens daily into circulation between May 16 and May 24. These tokens will primarily enter the DAO treasury, early private sale investors, and the project team.

On the other hand, Pyth Network, a decentralized oracle service provider built on Solana, plans to more than double its circulating token supply by unlocking 2.13 billion tokens worth approximately $1.25 billion on March 20.

This token unlock marks Pyth’s first release since its launch last November. The event aims to incentivize ecosystem participants, protocol developers, and early supporters.

Avalanche, others follow.

Beyond these mammoth unlocks, numerous other projects are gearing up for token releases in May.

Avalanche, a Layer 1 blockchain, will launch 9.54 million AVAX tokens valued at $332 million on May 22. Interestingly, this marks the second major token release for the blockchain network this year.

DeFi protocol dYdX will unlock 33.33 million tokens, representing 10% of its circulating supply valued at $71 million today. Similarly, USDe issuer Ethena will release approximately 4% of its circulating supply, equivalent to 53.6 million ENA tokens, on the same day.

Further, Memecoin is preparing to release 5.31 billion MEME tokens into circulation, amounting to $141 million and representing 31.92% of the token’s circulating supply.

Additional projects with scheduled unlock for this month include several Ethereum layer-2 networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Starknet.
