Ethereum’s network revenue plunges by 99%, sparking ‘death spiral’ concerns

Ethereum’s layer-1 network has witnessed a drastic decline in revenue, plummeting by 99% since March 2024.

Data from Token Terminal reveals that network revenue peaked at over $35 million on March 5. However, by Sept. 2, daily revenue had plunged to a yearly low of around $200,000.

Market observers attribute this decline to the growth of layer-2 (L2) networks and the March Dencun upgrade, which reduced fees for L2 transactions and reshaped Ethereum’s revenue structure. Token Terminal stated:

“Key metrics that show how lower transaction fees on L2s have increased usage, but also driven down the revenue on the L1.”

Post-upgrade transaction activity has shifted from Ethereum’s mainnet to L2 networks, leading to increased daily transactions and active users on these platforms.

However, this migration has significantly impacted Ethereum’s fee revenue. For instance, Coinbase’s L2 network, Base, generated $2.5 million in revenue in August but paid only $11,000 to settle on the mainnet, underlining the shift in value from Ethereum’s base layer.

Crypto analyst Kun warned that if this trend continues, L2 networks could dominate and potentially abandon Ethereum’s mainnet, especially for consumer applications. He emphasized the need for Ethereum to develop valuable use cases on its mainnet or risk a severe valuation issue.

He added:

“ETH L1 needs valuable use cases on mainnet that cannot be sieged or you have to hope that L2 usage is so big that basically you need 100000 times the usage on L2 to get the same value you did on mainnet with a tiny fraction which then creates a valley of valuation issues.”

‘Death spiral’

Bitcoin investor Fred Krueger has echoed these concerns, suggesting that Ethereum could face a “death spiral” if its low revenue situation persists.

He pointed out that Ethereum’s current fee revenue of $200,000 per day equates to $73 million annually, far from sufficient to sustain its market cap of $300 billion.

Krueger argues that a more realistic valuation might be closer to $3 billion, underscoring the disconnect between Ethereum’s fee income model and its market valuation. He said:

“[Ethereum is] not equivalent to a company making $73 million a year in profit, or even a company making $73 million a year in revenue. That $73 million is not even sufficient to buy back all the inflation that naturally comes to ETH validators.”

Coinbase’s Base network surpasses 1 million daily active addresses, outpaces competitors

Coinbase’s layer-2 network Base has recently achieved a key milestone, hitting over 1 million daily active addresses.

According to data from blockchain analytics platform GrowThePie, the Ethereum layer-2 network surpassed the 1 million mark for the first time on Aug. 24 when its active addresses reached 1.05 million.

Blockchain analytics platform Token Terminal corroborated this and compared Base’s growth to other layer-2 networks, concluding that Coinbase’s solution has outperformed its competitors.

Record-high transactions

Unsurprisingly, this milestone has translated into a record-high number of transactions on the network.

GrowThePie’s data shows that Base processed more than 4 million transactions during the last 24 hours, while Arbitrum—the largest Ethereum layer-2 network by total value locked—facilitated only 1.97 million transactions in the same period.

Further, the decentralized exchange’s total trading activity across Base has soared recently. Per DeFillama’s data, the network now accounts for around 10% of the sector’s volume, behind Binance Smart Chain (BSC) but ahead of major layer-1 blockchain networks like Avalanche and Tron.

Notably, Token Terminal stated that the Base network accounts for 84% of the daily active addresses on Uniswap, the largest decentralized exchange in the industry.

Market analysts highlighted the significance of these numbers, noting the strong adoption of Base despite its lack of a native token, unlike other layer-2 networks. Instead, Base has been able to attract increasing users to its platform via its seamless interoperability features and introduction of several innovations.

This has propelled it to become the second-largest Ethereum layer-2 network within a year of its launch. L2Beats data shows that its market share stands at around 17%, with the total value of assets locked on it at $6.3 billion.

Basenames launch

Meanwhile, these important milestones coincide with the network’s recent launch of Basenames.

On Aug. 21, Base introduced Basenames, allowing users to purchase a name linked to their Base wallet addresses. This service, built on the Ethereum Name Service platform, aims to enhance communication between users on Base.

By Aug. 26, Base’s lead developer Jesse Pollak announced that Basenames had attracted 200,000 users in its first week. Pollak also revealed that the network is exploring using multi-address domains with Basenames, allowing users to link multiple addresses to a single name.

Pixelcraft’s members-only L3 Gotchichain renamed as Geist

Web3 game developer Pixelcraft has rebranded its Arbitrum L3 gaming chain as Geist, also unveiling a members-only approach for its Aavegotchi game ecosystem.

Earlier in 2024, Pixelcraft announced its forthcoming L3 rollup, then codenamed Gotchichain, was settling on Ethereum L2 Base. Prior to the move, Aavegotchi had been announced to deploy to Polygon.

Now the developer has announced its L3 Gotchichain will be called Geist, which it describes as “the first members-only blockchain, built for gaming.”

As such the permissioned gaming chain is limited to games and apps approved either by Pixelcraft or the AavegotchiDAO. In another attempt to tackle bot activity, only members who are invited will be able to claim rewards such as airdrops and giveaways. Notably, non-members will still be able to play and transact on the chain, but not be eligible to claim any benefits.

To become a Geist member, you have to get an invite code, which will initially be airdropped only to Aavegotchi NFT holders. From then on, it hopes the network effect will take over. Additionally, some invites will also be given to users with “good onchain history”.

This approach is the result of what Pixelcraft identifies as a gap in the market for gaming blockchains focusing on quality over quantity, both in terms of games and users. In contrast to these, Geist is focused on genuine followers and players, rather than driven by impressive user numbers.

Onchain Arcade launches with mintable Asteroids

As part of the Base blockchain’s Onchain Summer engagement campaign, the Onchain Arcade has gone live.

Created in partnership with Atari and onchain loyalty outfit Stack, the Onchain Arcade is an initiative to release HTML5 versions of retro games, which are minted as NFTs on the Base blockchain.

Holders can then play the game with their high scores recorded on a leaderboard. Top scores will win various related prizes including Atari 2600+ hardware, merch and game codes.

The first game to be launched is Asteroids, which is now available priced $5, which will be followed by Breakout.

One key element of Onchain Arcade is that some of this revenue will be distributed to the games’ creators in what’s been labelled “the automated distribution of game sales proceeds”.

The initiative in terms of new games and leaderboard prizes will run until 30th August. Obviously, minted games will still be available to play after that date.

Former Base team raises $21 million to streamline Web3 gaming infrastructure

NPC Labs, a web3 gaming infrastructure startup founded by former Base team members, announced it raised $21 million. This amount includes $18 million from a seed round led by Pantera Capital, according to a July 22 statement shared with CryptoSlate.

Other investors included Makers Fund, Hashed, Collab+Currency, Sfermion, Mirana Ventures, Bitscale Capital, and Mantle EcoFund.

Onboarding 3 billion gamers

NPC Labs noted that Web2 developers see the potential of on-chain gaming but often underestimate the complexities of creating a protocol with sufficient liquidity and user base while managing infrastructure for smooth gameplay.

The firm hopes to solve this challenge by speeding up the onboarding and development processes of on-chain gaming. To achieve this, it is currently working as a core contributor to B3.fun, a groundbreaking horizontally scaled gaming ecosystem on Coinbase’s L2 network, Base.

B3 was designed with built-in chain abstraction, removing the need for users to bridge or switch networks. The ecosystem is currently in the testnet phase and supports games built on Ethereum, Base, and other EVM chains.

With a proprietary, highly scalable technology stack, B3 could also seamlessly onboard games from other chains like Solana.

NPC Labs Co-founder & CEO Daryl Xu noted that developers struggle to bring their games to market in today’s competitive gaming world, pointing out how they are at the mercy of “publishers for support, marketing, and distribution.”

However, B3 would help restore control to game developers and gamers by making it easy for them to benefit from being on-chain.

In a few weeks, the Summer Olympics 2024 will begin in Paris and to celebrate the event, the digital pins NFTs of the mascot have been launched on Base.

The news was given directly by nWay, the division of Animoca Brands that deals with Web3.

The launch takes place through My Olympic Rewards and the Onchain Summer campaign by Coinbase.

Paris 2024 Olympics: the NFT of the mascots on Base

These NFTs launched by nWay represent the digital pins of the Paris 2024 mascot, and were launched specifically to celebrate these Olympic Games.

The idea is to capture the playful spirit and energy of the Olympics with digital collectible items.

The NFT are available in two different designs with two different rarity levels: Epic and Legendary.

The first design (A) is that of the Paris 2024 mascot waving, available in both Epic and Legendary rarity levels.

The second (B) is the one of the Paris 2024 mascot with a flag, always available with Epic or Legendary rarity level.

The claim of the NFTs of the Paris Olympics on Base

There are different ways to request the NFTs of the digital pins of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games mascot.

The requests started yesterday, July 9, through Coinbase’s Onchain Summer campaign. The request period ends on August 12, and users will need to go to the Magic Eden platform to request and redeem the digital badge NFTs.

The supporters of OGJ and VTG can obtain all four pins, while through the mint on Magic Eden they can obtain the Legendary B or the Epic A.

The existing community of nWayPlay (NWP) and the supporters of Olympic Games Jam (OGJ) will receive the Legendary pin with the mascot waving exclusively.

Users will also be able to request and redeem Epic B through My Olympic Rewards using the points earned to redeem a digital pin.

For the OGJ/NWP community, it will be possible to enter the whitelist before July 23 by following the instructions contained in an email that will be sent.

In order to receive the NFT, users must use their own crypto wallet that supports the Base chain.

The layer-2 Base

Base is one of the most important layer-2s of Ethereum.

This is a chain designed and created by Coinbase, with the goal of making asset transfers on the main alternative chain to Bitcoin simpler and more economical.

The same Coinbase, that is the company which owns and manages the largest American crypto exchange, is involved in the initiative, given that the claim of these NFT is also possible thanks to their official Onchain Summer campaign.

Onchain Summer is a campaign that actually started last year, as an invitation to creators to launch their projects on Base.

In fact, Onchain technology allows anyone to be paid directly by their supporters with almost no fees, to have full ownership of their original digital works, and to build direct relationships with their community.

The creator of Base, Jesse Pollak, stated:

Base outpaces Optimism and Arbitrum amid Coinbase’s Smart Wallet debut

Coinbase-backed Ethereum layer-2 network, Base, is experiencing rapid growth, reflecting the significant adoption and attention it enjoys from the crypto community.

Base’s growth comes amid the exchange launch of its Smart Wallet, a self-custodial solution aimed at bringing more than 1 billion users on-chain.

Increased network activity

Base recorded the highest daily transactions among Ethereum layer-2 networks in the past day, surpassing notable rivals like Arbitrum and Optimism.

According to data from blockchain analytics platform GrowThePie, Base’s transaction count increased 7.1% to 2.7 million on June 4, compared to Arbitrum’s 1.89 million.

L2Beat data further confirms this significant activity. The platform shows that Base processes an average of 31.37 transactions per second (TPS), while Arbitrum handles about 22 TPS.

This surge in network activity has led to substantial growth in the total value of assets locked (TVL) on the layer-2 network. L2BEAT reports that Base’s TVL has increased by 8.68% to $7.64 billion, closely approaching Optimism’s TVL of $7.76 billion. Currently, Optimism and Base control 16.42% and 16.17% of the L2 market, respectively, while Arbitrum holds a 40% share.

Additionally, a Dune Analytics dashboard curated by on-chain analyst Kofi indicates that Base is the highest-earning layer-2 network over the past three months. According to the dashboard, Base earned $16.88 million in March, $12.90 million in April, and $6.98 million in May.

Market experts said network activity on Base surged following the implementation of the Dencun Upgrade in March. This update introduced proto-danksharding, significantly reducing gas fees for layer-2 solutions like Base. At the time, CryptoSlate reported that Base saw heightened bot trading activities that pushed its transaction fees to high levels compared to rivals.

Smart wallet

Coinbase has introduced its highly anticipated Smart Wallet product to the market, saying it would address the significant challenges that have made going on-chain “slow, expensive, and hard.”

According to the firm:

“Smart Wallets allows users to create a free, secure, self-custody wallet in just a few seconds. They simplify onboarding, reduce the number of transactions to be signed, and seamlessly let you use your Coinbase balances onchain.”

The self-custodial wallet would initially support eight networks, including Base, Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB, and Zora.

DeFi landscape shifts as Solana dethrones Ethereum in trading volume

Identifying trends in DeFi requires analyzing activity on decentralized exchanges (DEXs). These DEXs are the cornerstone of the DeFi market, at the center of DeFi activity, and the main driving force of the sector. To understand what drives DeFi, we need to look at the volume, trader activity, and variety of trading pairs on DEXs.

Over the last seven days, the DEX market has seen significant activity, with a total trading volume of $31.56 billion. According to data from Dune Analytics, there were 103,830 unique traded pairs during this period, and the market welcomed approximately 1.292 million new traders.

One of the most interesting developments in the DeFi market is Solana, which has dethroned Ethereum and positioned itself as the de facto king of DeFi. With a total trading volume of $10.98 billion over the last week, Solana accounts for 34.8% of the entire DEX market volume. This significant market share is a testament to Solana’s fast-growing ecosystem, which supports a wide range of DEXs, from niche swap markets to prominent players like Raydium.

Despite a slight decrease of 4.49% in volume over the period, Solana continues to lead in terms of active traders, hosting 2.542 million users. This is substantially higher than any other blockchain and significantly higher than the 470,704 users Ethereum has seen over the past week. Such a high discrepancy between Solana and Ethereum’s number of users highlights Solana’s appeal as a preferred trading platform. The blockchain also supported 50,707 active pairs, the highest in the market, which shows its users’ diverse range of trading options.

With $9.01 billion in volume, Ethereum trails closely behind Solana and holds 28.5% of the market. The volume decreased by 27.05% over the past week, which might not be a notable oscillation for a smaller blockchain but is especially significant given Etehreum’s foundational role in DeFi. However, with 470,704 active traders and 15,568 active pairs, the blockchain remains a key hub for DEX activity despite the decrease.

Binance’s BNB ranks third in volume with $4.56 billion, making up 14.5% of the total market. This represents a slight increase of 0.71%, showcasing resilience amidst market downturns. With 1 million active traders and 45,249 active pairs, the BNB chain continues to be a preferred choice for a large number of traders. However, the relatively small volume relative to the number of users shows that those traders might be dealing in lower volume trades than on Ethereum.

With a volume of $2.67 billion, Arbitrum captures 8.5% of the market. The volume drop of 28.04% could reflect shifting user preferences or broader market trends. Nonetheless, the 336,072 active traders it saw in the past week show that quite a bit of value is still being generated. Base is a notable up-and-comer in DeFi, with $2.36 billion in volume and 7.5% of the market share. Despite a decrease of 29.39% in volume, Base supports a relatively high number of active traders at 672,196, indicating strong user engagement.

Regarding DEXs, Uniswap leads the market with a 7-day volume of $10.91 billion, constituting 34.6% of the total market volume. It maintains a high number of active traders at 1.456 million and supports 30,683 active pairs despite a 28.93% drop in volume over the past week. The decrease in volume could be attributed to broader market conditions, but its substantial trader base suggests enduring loyalty and trust in the platform.

Operating on the Solana blockchain, Raydium has shown impressive growth with a volume of $5.80 billion, marking an 11.76% increase. With 2.309 million active traders and 46,905 active pairs, Raydium is a critical player in Solana’s dominance, providing users with a wide array of trading options and contributing significantly to the volume on the blockchain.

The leading DEX on BNB, Pancakeswap, saw a trading volume of $4.54 billion, with a marginal decrease of 0.63% in the past seven days. With 1.172 million active traders and 43,239 active pairs, Pancakeswap remains a significant force in the DeFi space. Its volume stability suggests a resilient platform that continues to attract a steady stream of users.

The large number of traders and active pairs shows that the DeFi market is highly liquid, and traders have a wide range of options. Solana’s dominance over the market shows users prefer platforms that offer speed and low transaction costs despite occasional outages and hiccups.

The significant drops in volume we’ve seen across blockchains and even individual DEXs are contrasted by resilience in platforms such as Pancakeswap and BNB, showing that pockets of stability form in the market even during high volatility.

Crypto phishing attacks plummet in April, reaching a yearly low of $38 million

Phishing attacks within the crypto industry decreased 46% to $38 million in April, the lowest amount this year, according to the security firm Scam Sniffer.

Notably, this aligns with CertiK’s finding that crypto-related exploits and scams plummeted to a historic low of $25.7 million in April.

Per Scam Sniffer’s findings, the Coinbase-backed Ethereum layer-2 network Base recorded a 145% surge to $8.2 million in phishing incidents during the past month. Two of the top 10 largest single thefts occurred on this chain, accounting for 21% of the month’s total theft.

Meanwhile, ERC-20 tokens bore the brunt of attacks, with 88% of the stolen assets belonging to this class.

Scam Sniffer identified fake accounts on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) as the primary tool utilized by scammers. These attackers mimicked prominent projects like Renzo, Avail, and Ether.fi, Wormhole, and Omni, and their accounts often sport fake verification marks, lending an air of authenticity that is used to lure unsuspecting users.

Using these accounts, the attackers post deceptive comments on social media platforms to drive unsuspecting individuals to malicious sites where their assets can be stolen.

Additionally, the attackers usually employed phishing signatures such as Permit, IncreaseAllowance, and Uniswap Permit2. These malicious signatures grant the attackers access to their victim’s funds without their knowledge.

Scam Sniffer added:

“Despite wallets increasing phishing alerts for certain signatures, wallet drainers are actively finding ways around these alerts using legitimate contracts like Disperse and Uniswap Multicall, and variants of value normalization.”
