Peter Mintzberg has taken over as the CEO of the digital asset management firm Grayscale, according to an Aug. 15 announcement.

The new appointment comes roughly three months after Grayscale’s former CEO, Michael Sonnenshein, resigned for undisclosed reasons.

Mintzberg, who has extensive experience in the financial sector, previously served as Head of Strategy at BlackRock and Goldman Sachs. His background also includes roles in strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and investor relations at OppenheimerFunds and Invesco.

In his post on X, Mintzberg highlighted his enthusiasm for leading Grayscale and emphasized the rapid growth of the crypto sector in asset management. He expressed eagerness to work with the Grayscale team to enhance the company’s success and serve its clients effectively.

Grayscale is a significant player in the global crypto asset management market. The firm was instrumental in persuading the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to approve Bitcoin spot-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in January, overcoming the regulator’s previous rejections.

However, Grayscale faces increased competition as several traditional financial institutions, like BlackRock and Fidelity, enter the crypto sector. Notably, BlackRock has overtaken Grayscale as the largest digital asset fund manager by assets under management.

This shift is partly due to significant outflows from Grayscale’s high-cost Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. Investors have moved to more affordable options, such as the BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), leading to a decline in Grayscale’s assets.

Despite these challenges, Grayscale continues introducing new crypto trust products, including those focused on decentralized AI projects and the DeFi protocol MakerDAO.

Nevertheless, market observers are interested in how Mintzberg will navigate recent challenges and help the firm regain its market leadership status. However, Barry Silbert, the CEO of Grayscale’s parent company, Digital Currency Group, expressed confidence in Mintzberg’s ability to drive innovation and growth that would drive the company’s growth.

Morgan Stanley will be the first major Wall Street bank to permit its financial advisors to offer spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), CNBC reported on Aug. 2, citing sources familiar with the matter.

This decision enables Morgan Stanley’s over 15,000 financial advisors to sell shares of BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) — two of the most prominent ETFs with about $30 billion in total inflows — to select clients with a net worth of at least $1.5 million.

The move comes after months of due diligence since the lender has been considering allowing its brokers to actively promote Bitcoin ETFs since April. At the time, sources said the bank was contemplating the move due to growing client demand for these investment products. Previously, the bank’s clients had to initiate transactions to access these financial investments.

Client criteria

Apart from the client’s high net worth, Morgan Stanley stated that the interested investor must demonstrate a substantial risk tolerance and interest in speculative investments.

Furthermore, investments in these spot Bitcoin ETFs are restricted to taxable brokerage accounts and unavailable for retirement accounts.

The bank will also monitor clients’ crypto holdings to prevent excessive exposure to the asset class.

Bitcoin ETFs

Market analysts view Morgan Stanley’s move as a positive development for the crypto industry, especially following the success of the Bitcoin ETF.

Nate Geraci, president of ETF Store, emphasized the importance of this shift, noting the exceptional success of spot Bitcoin ETFs. He said:

“Spot Bitcoin ETFs have shattered industry launch records with one hand tied behind the back. These products are only starting to be made available at the largest financial advisory shops.”

Similarly, Bloomberg senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas described the development as a “major deal” because the lender’s “advisors manage $5.7 trillion in client assets, the biggest of the warehouses.”

Traditional financial institutions are finding new ways to offer investors access to digital assets via exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

On June 27, Henry Jim, an ETF Analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence, reported on three ETF products that would provide investors access to Bitcoin, Gold, Ethereum, and MicroStrategy.

Stacked Bitcoin and Gold ETF

Tidal Investments and Quantify Chaos Advisors have jointly filed a prospectus for a new ETF offering indirect exposure to Bitcoin and Gold.

According to the filing, this ETF will leverage investments to expose investors to both assets without directly purchasing them. It will invest in Bitcoin futures, gold futures, cash, reverse purchase agreements, and other Bitcoin or Gold-related ETFs.

The ETF aims to blend Bitcoin and Gold strategies to offer complementary benefits despite the lack of correlation between these assets. It seeks to minimize short-term market fluctuations and provide stable investment opportunities.

The filing stated:

“The Fund uses leverage to ‘stack’ the total return of holdings in the Fund’s Bitcoin strategy together with the total returns of holdings in the Fund’s Gold strategy. Essentially, one dollar invested in the Fund provides approximately one dollar of exposure to the Fund’s Bitcoin strategy and approximately one dollar of exposure to the Fund’s Gold strategy.”

MicroStrategy ETF

In other Bitcoin-related ETF news, T-Rex Group, a prominent ETF issuer, has applied to the SEC for funds that will offer investors 2X Long and inverted leveraged positions to MicroStrategy.

Bloomberg’s senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas noted that if the funds were approved, they would expose investors to about 20 times the typical volatility of the S&P 500. He stated:

“These are a near-lock to be [the] most volatile ETFs ever seen in the US, [and they] will likely be in the neighborhood of 20x the volatility of SPX. The ghost pepper of ETF hot sauce.”

MicroStrategy is the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, amassing 214,400 BTC, equivalent to more than 1% of the top crypto asset’s total supply. The company’s executive chairman, Michael Saylor, is a vocal BTC advocate who has maintained that the firm will continue with its BTC acquisition.

Ether Option Income Strategy ETF

YieldMax also filed for an ETF that holds spot Ethereum ETFs and sells calls for income. This offers investors indirect exposure to ETH, the second-largest digital asset by market cap.

According to Jim:

“[The ETF will] invest in spot ETH ETFs, sells options on them for the premium. Will have a cap on upside of performance of the underlying Ether ETF.”

Meanwhile, the filing also clarified that the Fund does not invest directly in ETH or other digital assets. It avoids direct investment in derivatives that track ETH performance and does not seek direct exposure to the digital assets’ spot or cash price.
