Bruno Cerasi, famous Italian artist, continues the story of his journey by launching the drop of his new NFT artwork Faded22/II on the SuperRare marketplace. 

For 2023, in fact, there is a unique digital butterfly generated by the algorithm that translates the artist’s eye visits.

On February 29, 2024, Bruno Cerasi launched the drop of Faded22/ II, the NFT artwork depicting his famous digital butterfly as the second chapter of the story of his journey. 

Available exclusively on SuperRare, the artwork by Faded22/ II represents the continuation of the artist’s story, telling the whole of 2023.

And indeed, Bruno Cerasi had started his project Faded22/ with a series of NFT works that tell his experience of losing part of his sight, after his stroke in 2009.

For 2022, 12 digital butterflies in NFT format have been created, generated by an algorithm that translates monthly eye exams into colors and shapes.

In 2023, however, the artist only made an eye examination that generated the current new and unique NFT work by Faded22/ II. 

Bruno Cerasi: the story behind the NFT project of Faded22

The NFT project Faded22/ reflects the artist’s personal experience who wants to convey his feelings related to the memory of what has been seen and what will no longer be seen. 

On X, Cerasi tells his story up to the release of his latest work Faded22/II on SuperRare. 

Bruno Cerasi, born in 1983, is an artist who, in general, focuses on performances and installations. The main concept of his artistic research is the dualism between light and shadow. His approach to art changed profoundly in 2009, when a stroke caused him to lose part of his vision. 

From here, Cerasi has developed several projects, including Faded22/, choosing a butterfly as the subject of his works to symbolize “transformation”. Since 2013, Cerasi’s butterfly represents the overflow of information that surrounds us, and the paradox of being so distant from each other. 

In Faded22/ The digital butterflies of Cerasi communicate the monitoring of his field of vision which, through numbers, graphs and algorithms, are then transformed into lights and colors. 

The first butterfly sold for 2 ETH and the artist’s 2023

As anticipated, the Italian artist started dropping his digital NFT butterflies at the beginning of 2022. In that year, the Faded22/ collection included 12 butterflies, one for each month. 

The very first butterfly of January was sold in March 2022, with the auction closing at 2 ETH.

Not only that, in September 2022, Cerasi’s NFT project was also exhibited at a collective NFT exhibition in New York, organized by the Art Innovation Gallery. The exhibition took place on a gigantic led wall in Time Square, one of the most famous squares in the world.

Arriving in 2023, Cerasi had also launched the drop of another NFT artwork “Skin and Bones I” on the SuperRare marketplace. Unlike the butterflies, in this artwork Cerasi has broken down the photographic image to develop infinite polygonal tiles of a digital mosaic.

These black and white cards and shades of gray then became the plumage of a magpie thief flying through the Sicilian skies, captured by what shines.

The “Winter Exhibition” exhibition, which will be present in the Spatial.io metaverse from Saturday 21 May 2022, will feature the first works from the NFT Faded22/ collection and other unpublished illustrations by Bruno Cerasi, the famous Italian artist.

The “Winter Exhibition” is intended to be a clear demonstration of how the real world and the digital world can coexist and dialogue perfectly with each other. 

And indeed, it is precisely the collection of works NFT Faded22/ that stems from a need to express through art, the story of an artist who lost part of his sight and field of vision in 2009 due to an ischemic stroke. 

From that moment on, his personal research began to focus on the invisible connections that bind the relationships between people

Faded22/ is Cerasi’s project that each month generates an NFT butterfly from the algorithm that can transform his gradually worsening eyesight into something extremely beautiful.

The collection reached its fourth butterfly NFT in April and can be seen on the Foundation.app website where it is also available for purchase. The first auction of the butterfly NFT in January 2022, was closed for 2 ETH. 

But why the butterfly? Looking at the lepidopteran anatomy, this body is none other than the mirrored wing itself. While there is light on one side, there is darkness on the other; while life may be a trap, there is always a way to find freedom. 

Cerasi’s life is a constant journey that oscillates between darkness and light, between resignation and hope. 

That is why, in this specific case, the butterfly represents escape from the reality in which the artist is trapped, managing to escape through imagination and dreams, both elements also present in the various illustrations on display.

Faded22 represents a personal experience. The artist, in fact, had a stroke in 2009 that took away part of his sight and, recently, after realizing that his sight is still diminishing, he decided to use the art and technology of Non Fungible Tokens to launch his collection.

Basically, every month for a year, Cerasi will launch his NFT digital butterfly that represents, through an algorithm, a work of art that transforms the response of his eye exam, thus telling the story of his change.

This digital art project by Bruno Cerasi, like all his art in general, has been defined as a “hymn to life with its ebbs and flows“, i.e. an open dialogue with viewers.

The aim of this dialogue is to communicate and build invisible, yet perceptible, sentimental connections. 

In the Faded 2022 project, Cerasi communicates the monitoring of his field of vision, which, through numbers and graphics and an algorithm, are then transformed into colours. The choice of the butterfly, on the other hand, is entirely symbolic. 

Cerasi, since 2013, has chosen the butterfly to represent the overflow of information that surrounds us, and the paradox of being so distant from one another.

In fact, he started working with installations and spaces, abandoning painting and drawing, and focusing on light and shadow, used as the main elements of his artistic research.

The new project is called Faded22/, and was born after the artist slowly began to lose his sight. The project recounts this very change, thanks to an algorithm that transforms into digital butterflies the response of the eye examinations he makes every month. 

More precisely, the monitoring of his visual field produces numerical data and graphics that, thanks to the algorithm, will be transformed into colors generated by these same numerical data. 

Each month a new digital butterfly will be available on the artist’s platform, Foundation, in NFT format. The first official drop is set for 14 February 2022.

In addition, an AirDrop is already underway via a whitelist open until 31 January accessible from the artist’s Twitter profile.

The butterfly has been Cerasi’s symbol since 2013 when he chose it to represent the overflow of information that surrounds us, and the paradox of being so distant from one another.
