Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has dismissed the “lies and misinformation” surrounding the network’s staking operations.

In a Sept. 11 post on X, Hoskinson expressed frustration over the spread of misinformation about ADA, noting that the network does not lock its staked tokens. He stated:

“The lies and misinformation about Cardano have reached epic levels. Stake isn’t locked, but they still lie.”

Hoskinson’s statement followed claims suggesting that Cardano’s large market cap was due to investors being locked into their ADA holdings and being unable to sell. This allegation emerged during a recent podcast with several crypto commentators, including InvestAnswers, CTO Larsson, MartyParty, and Mando.

In the podcast, MartyParty suggested that Cardano’s high market capitalization wasn’t a true reflection of its value. Instead, he argued that it resulted from investors’ inability to sell their ADA holdings because they had been “tricked” into locking their assets in the network’s staking pool.

Community response

Aside from Hoskinson, several Cardano holders quickly refuted the claims, with many condemning the false accusations.

PRIDE, a notable stake pool operator in the network, pointed out that Cardano was the only top-20 crypto project offering native liquid staking, meaning ADA tokens are never locked. Unlike other networks, Cardano doesn’t need liquid staking derivatives or tokens. So, its flexible staking system allows users to maintain self-custody of their assets, aligning with Satoshi Nakamoto’s vision, PRIDE explained.

The firm added:

“Staked coins don’t leave your wallet, and can be spent anytime or used in DeFi. That also means no slashing.”

According to Staking Rewards data, over 22 billion ADA tokens have been staked to contribute to network security and facilitate the validation of new blocks. The current reward rate for staking ADA is 2.82 % per year.

Cardano developments

The controversy surrounding ADA staking comes as Cardano has recently recorded significant milestones in its network development.

On Sept. 1, Cardano completed the first phase of its highly anticipated Chang Hard Fork, which introduced decentralized governance to the network.

In the lead-up to the upgrade, the Cardano Foundation revealed that the network saw an uptick in key metrics in August as the number of smart contracts, transactions, and wallet interactions increased by around 1%, respectively.

Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, has voiced opposition to burning the blockchain network’s over 1.5 billion ADA treasury tokens, which are worth around $500 million.

On Sept. 5, Hoskinson, in a social media post on X, pointed out that the treasury assets weren’t just preprinted tokens but were generated through block production and transactions.

Burning these assets, Hoskinson argued, would amount to theft from Stake Pool Operators (SPOs) and ADA holders. He stated:

“The entire treasury comes from people building blocks and economic activity. You are effectively stealing from every SPO and ADA holder if you burn the treasury.”

Hoskinson’s comments come amid growing calls to burn the 1.5 billion ADA tokens in the treasury following the recent integration of decentralized governance on Cardano.

On Sept. 1, Cardano completed the first phase of its Chang hard fork, marking a significant step toward full self-governance. This move positioned Cardano as the first layer-1 blockchain to implement a token-based governance system.

With this development, the Cardano community has begun exploring ways to utilize its newfound governance powers. A community member, Big Pey, recently asked for input on the potential burning of treasury assets, posting:

“Now that Cardano has full on-chain governance. There’s 1.5 Billion ADA in the treasury. The ADA community could vote to burn all of the ADA. Would you vote to burn all of the ADA? If not, what do you think we need to spend the funds on?”

The proposal has sparked mixed reactions. Some see burning the tokens as a positive move that would greatly benefit ADA’s price, while others warn of potential harm from such moves.

Jaromír Tesař, one of the network’s decentralized representatives (DReps), stated that burning the assets would be a “terrible mistake.” He suggested the funds could be better used to support Cardano’s development.

He said:

“We could launch several more Catalyst Funds, use ADA for liquidity in DeFi, accelerate the development of scalability technologies, fund the deployment of USDC and USDT on Cardano, and even invest in marketing.”

On Sept. 1, the Cardano blockchain completed the first phase of its Chang hard fork, signaling a new era of decentralized governance for the network.

The upgrade is a significant achievement for Cardano, marking a pivotal step toward fulfilling its vision of a fully self-governing, decentralized network. The move is also said to set it apart as the first major blockchain to implement a token-based governance system.

Charles Hoskinson, Cardano’s founder, described this achievement as monumental, surpassing even Bitcoin, stating, “This dwarfs Bitcoin. It’s unique, and books will be written about what has happened.”

Hoskinson emphasized that Cardano’s accomplishment is one of humans’ most significant technical feats because a distributed system operating across more than 100 countries seamlessly evolved into a decentralized entity, complete with its constitution, without central coordination.

Hoskinson further commented:

“Cardano is now a governance virus that is living, self- replicating, and self-sustaining. It has intelligence and a will to survive and grow. Nothing can shut it down. Nothing can stop its growth.”

However, despite the monumental achievement, the blockchain network’s ADA token saw no gain, declining by 4% during the past day to slip out of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, according to CryptoSlate’s data.

What’s Next?

The initial phase of the upgrade, lasting 90 days, introduces foundational governance features and prepares for the upcoming Conway-era functionality. During this period, delegated representatives (DReps) can register, and ADA holders can delegate their voting power.

An interim constitution will also be established, supported by a technical guardrail script. Further, an interim constitutional committee will oversee the constitutionality of governance actions until a full constitution is ratified.

This period will also be a testing ground for limited governance actions, including parameter changes, hard forks, and ‘Info’ actions.

After 90 days, the second phase of the Chang hard fork will commence, fully empowering the new governance bodies, including the constitutional committee, delegate representatives, and staking pool operators.

The Cardano Foundation noted:

“All governance entities, including DReps, SPOs, and the interim constitutional committee, can vote on governance actions during this stage. The conclusion of this stage will allow for treasury withdrawals.”

Intersect, a Cardano membership organization, announced that the highly anticipated Chang hard fork will occur on Sept. 1, according to an Aug. 29 statement shared with CryptoSlate.

Intersect highlighted that the Chang hard fork is a revolutionary step for the ecosystem, marking the final phase of the network’s decentralization process, Voltaire.

Intersect director Jack Briggs emphasized that the upgrade is the culmination of two years of collaborative efforts involving thousands of people who have participated in workshops, committees, and governance testing on the SanchoNet testnet.

Briggs added:

“The upgrades [will] enhance Cardano’s decentralization, marking a new frontier for the blockchain and all its participants. The upgrades will introduce minimum-viable-on-chain decision-making to all ada holders.

First upgrade

The hard fork includes two upgrades. The first upgrade initiates the technical bootstrapping process, which has been ongoing for the past 10 weeks and involves the hard fork working group.

The group has been reviewing progress, ensuring desired thresholds, and preparing the ecosystem for the hard fork. They have raised necessary governance actions and signed off on the hard fork, which will be the last of its kind before ADA holders take control.

Notably, the transaction to trigger Chang #1 upgrade on the Cardano mainnet was submitted a few hours ago. Nicolas Serny, a governance lead at the Cardano Foundation, stated:

“This milestone officially ushers us into the Conway era, beginning in epoch 507 on September 1, 2024, at 21:45 UTC.”

Second upgrade

Three months from now, Cardano will enter the #2 Chang upgrade with approval from the Interim Constitutional Committee (ICC) and Stake Pool Operators (SPOs). This phase will transition the network from its technical bootstrapping stage to active participation.

The upgrade will activate advanced governance features, including decentralized representatives (DReps) and governance tools for broader participation. These enhancements will fully transition Cardano to a community-driven decision-making model.

Once Chang #1 is complete, DReps can register on the mainnet and gather delegations in anticipation of Chang #2.

Dan Gambardello, a Cardano enthusiast, described this phase as a paradigm shift in blockchain governance. He stated:

“With such a governance model, Cardano could very well redefine what it means to be a leading blockchain, potentially attracting more developers, users, and investors. No longer will Cardano be seen as yet another project run by some large organization; it will be a community-driven powerhouse.”

Intersect, a Cardano membership organization, has proposed the Chang hard fork for implementation on Aug. 27.

In an Aug. 20 post, Intersect explained that its proposal was based on a thorough review of the project’s progress, community feedback, and the Chang hard fork working group’s sentiments. It stated:

“SPO-readiness was confirmed last week, the exchange liquidity metric is good and improving, and we have been receiving positive readiness updates from many leading DApps.”

However, the date remains tentative, pending a final decision on Aug. 23. Intersect noted that the timeline could shift if unexpected issues arise, with Sept. 3 as an alternative window.

This update follows the Node 9.1 upgrade, which marked the final step before the Chang hard fork.

According to Cardanoscan, 80% of stake pool operators (SPOs) have adopted Node 9.1.0, meeting the threshold required for the hard fork. However, liquidity is still a concern, with only 34% of exchanges adopting the upgrade—well below the 80% target.

Chang hard fork

The Chang hard fork will introduce significant changes to Cardano’s software, rendering it incompatible with previous versions. So, the community’s meticulous planning for this upgrade is understandable, as it presents a key milestone in the blockchain network’s journey toward the Voltaire era.

Named after the late Cardano evangelist Phil Chang, the Chang upgrade will give Cardano holders a more direct role in the network’s governance. In this era, ADA holders can now actively participate in decisions that shape the platform’s future, marking a critical step in Cardano’s path to full decentralization.

Additionally, the upgrade will enhance smart contracts, particularly with the introduction of the PlutusV3 cryptographic primitive, which aims to bolster data security on the network.

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has emphasized the importance of this upgrade, calling it “the most significant milestone” in the crypto industry’s history.

He pointed out that the move will make,

“Cardano a decentralized civilization spanning the entire world with millions of residents. We’ll have the most advanced blockchain governance system, annual budgets, a treasury, and the wisdom of our entire community to guide us.”

Kyber Network is a hub of liquidity protocols that aggregates liquidity from various sources to provide secure and instant transactions on any decentralized application (DApp). The main goal of KyberSwap is to enable DeFi DApps, decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and other users easy access to liquidity pools that provide the best rates.

All transactions on KyberSwap are on-chain, which means they can be easily verified using any Ethereum block explorer. Projects can build on top of KyberSwap to utilize all the services offered by the protocol, such as the instant settlement of tokens, liquidity aggregation, and a customizable business model.

KyberSwap looks to solve the liquidity issue in the decentralized finance (DeFi) industry by allowing developers to build products and services without having to worry about liquidity for different needs.

The Kyber Network Crystal (KNC) token is a utility token that is the “glue that connects different stakeholders in Kyber’s ecosystem.” KNC holders can stake their tokens in the KyberDAO to help govern the platform and vote on important proposals — and earn staking rewards in Ethereum (ETH) that come from trading fees.

Cardano network’s highly anticipated Node 9.0.0 has launched to much acclaim on July 8.

According to its GitHub document:

“Node 9.0.0 is a major release of the Cardano node that contains all the changes that are needed for the Conway ledger era, including on-chain governance via CIP-1694, support for Plutus v1 reference scripts, and Plutus script signature support via CIP-69.”

Why Node 9.0.0 is important for Cardano

In a July 8 video on social media platform X, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson emphasized Node 9.0.0’s importance. He explained that it lays the groundwork for the Chang hard fork, significantly altering the blockchain network’s structure.

Hoskinson said:

“Node 9.0.0 basically means Cardano has the best, the most decentralized and I hope the most effective decentralized government in the entire cryptocurrency industry.”

However, Hoskinson noted that Stake Pool Operators (SPOs) need to independently test the new node and upgrade before the network can perform the Chang hard fork. So, with at least 70% or more SPOs upgraded, a hard fork date will be set for the network to transition into Chang.

Data from Cardanoscan shows that exchanges and stake pools are not yet ready for the hard fork as of press time.

Chang hard fork

The Chang hard fork marks the culmination of a multiyear effort to transfer project ownership from Cardano Foundation, EMURGO, and Input-Output Global to the community. This move will transform the blockchain into a self-sustaining entity with features like on-chain voting and participant rights.

In this era, Chang will introduce Delegate Representatives (DReps), elected by Cardano token holders. These representatives will draft a Cardano Constitution, becoming the network’s supreme governing law. Once approved, DReps will propose changes in accordance with the constitution.

Hoskinson reflected on the significance of this move, saying it would help Cardano become the most scalable ecosystem within the next 24 months because “governance is the key differentiating feature.”
