Bitwise plans to shift three of its Bitcoin and Ethereum futures ETFs from their current long-only strategies to ones that alternate between crypto and US Treasuries, according to an Oct. 4 statement.

The company’s crypto futures ETFs — including the Bitwise Bitcoin Strategy Optimum Roll ETF (BITC), the Bitwise Ethereum Strategy ETF (AETH), and the Bitwise Bitcoin and Ether Equal Weight Strategy ETF (BTOP) — will be rebranded to the Bitwise Trendwise Bitcoin and Treasuries Rotation Strategy ETF (BITC), the Bitwise Trendwise Ethereum and Treasuries Rotation Strategy ETF (AETH), and the Bitwise Trendwise BTC/ETH and Treasuries Rotation Strategy ETF (BTOP), respectively.

The fund manager expects the adjustment to occur by Dec. 3.

Notably, this move comes during the same week that the asset manager applied to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a spot XRP ETF.

Bitwise Trendwise ETFs

According to the statement, these ETFs will adjust their exposure to crypto or US Treasuries, depending on market conditions. During positive market trends, they will focus on crypto investments, while during downturns, they will shift to US Treasuries.

Bitwise explained that the Trendwise strategy improves risk-adjusted returns by taking advantage of market momentum while offering protection during bearish conditions. The strategy relies on a proprietary signal that monitors the 10- and 20-day exponential moving averages (EMA) of crypto prices.

So, when the 10-day EMA surpasses the 20-day EMA—signaling upward momentum—the funds will invest in crypto. If the situation reverses, the funds will rotate into US Treasuries.

Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan explained that this strategy reflects broader trends in asset management. He stated:

“The new Trendwise strategies capitalize on that momentum through a trend-following strategy that rotates between crypto and Treasuries exposure based on market direction. The goal is to help minimize downside volatility and potentially improve risk-adjusted returns.”

Meanwhile, Bitcoin market analyst Joe Consorti praised the development, stating:

“This is massive news for bitcoin as a macro asset. US Treasuries are the preferred asset for all of the world’s financial institutions. Adding bitcoin to a rotating investment vehicle will juice UST returns and be an enticing diversifier for UST-heavy balance sheets.”

These changes will not impact the funds’ expense ratios or tax treatment, so current investors will not need to take any action.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed lowering the minimum deposit requirements for stakers on the blockchain network.

In an Oct. 3 post on X, Buterin voiced his support for reducing the current 32 ETH threshold needed to stake on the network to support solo staking. He believes the current requirement is a barrier to entry for many rather than a necessity based on bandwidth.

Buterin suggested lowering the minimum deposit to 16 or 24 ETH, with a corresponding increase in bandwidth requirements. He stated:

“I think there’s a sane version of this where we recognize that 32 ETH is much more of a barrier than bandwidth requirement, and temporarily do a trade where we up the bandwidth requirement a bit and in exchange drop the staking deposit minimum to eg. 16 or 24 ETH.”

Buterin explained that reducing the minimum deposit would help expand Ethereum’s staking program and make it more accessible for solo stakers.

He also mentioned that, in the future, this requirement could drop further to 1 ETH, depending on advancements like OrbitSSF. Likewise, bandwidth demands would decrease significantly with the full deployment of PeerDAS, a feature designed to improve data availability sampling on the blockchain network.

The Ethereum co-founder’s comments highlight the importance of solo stakers to the blockchain network’s security and decentralization. Solo stakers operate full nodes on private computers without relying on third-party platforms or staking pools.

However, the high deposit requirement for staking has deterred broader participation, limiting the number of solo stakers. On-chain data shows that almost 48% of Ethereum staking is controlled by 11 staking providers, with Lido alone managing a significant 24% share.

This high concentration has sparked concerns within the community about the dangers of centralization, which prompted Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano to point out the importance of solo staking as “the very beating heart of Ethereum.”

He added:

“Without solo staking (and the ability to run full nodes at home!), we lose the only thing that is worth anything real in this entire ecosystem – true decentralization.”

Tron generated total revenue of $566 million in the third quarter, placing it ahead of giants like Ethereum, Solana, and Bitcoin.

The figure reflects a 43% increase compared to the network’s second-quarter earnings. Over the past year, Tron has generated approximately $1.66 billion in total revenue, marking a 113% year-on-year growth.

Token Terminal shows that Tron’s third-quarter revenue was more than 2x higher than Ethereum’s $253 million, 5x higher than Solana’s $105 million and 9x greater than Bitcoin’s $57 million.

Reacting to the results, Tron founder Justin Sun voiced optimism for the final quarter of the year, stating:

“We are confident that Q4 will see even more growth compared to Q3.”

Robust stablecoin activity

Tron’s revenue spike was primarily driven by its robust stablecoin activity and the growing memecoin sector on the network.

DeFillama data reveals that Tron is the second-largest blockchain for stablecoins, controlling 34.8% of the market and supplying $59.8 billion in stablecoins.

The network’s stablecoin supply grew 21.6% this year, driven largely by demand for Tether’s USDT, which accounts for 98.3% of the stablecoins on Tron. USDT is the largest stablecoin in the crypto market, with a market cap of roughly $120 billion.

Market observers noted that Tron’s low fees and fast transactions drive its popularity in emerging markets like Nigeria and Argentina. In these regions, users increasingly turn to stablecoins to shield against their volatile local currencies and also as a form of exposure to the US Dollars.

Additionally, the recent launch of SunPump, a memecoin launchpad, has boosted Tron’s visibility within the industry and contributed significantly to the increased network activity.

Token Terminal noted that daily transactions on the Tron network exceed 8 million, fueled by stablecoin transfers and the memecoin frenzy.

Consequently, the network’s average transaction fees have risen from approximately 20 cents to $1 over the past two years, inadvertently boosting its revenue.

Malicious actors stole more than $750 million in various crypto-related hacks and scams during the third quarter, pushing total losses for the year to over $1.9 billion, according to CertiK’s quarterly Hack3d security report.

The losses were incurred in 155 separate incidents, showing a 9.5% rise in stolen funds compared to the previous quarter. However, there were 27 fewer incidents than in the second quarter.

According to the report, three major events were responsible for most of the funds stolen during the quarter. Two of the largest incidents were a $238 million phishing attack targeting a Bitcoin whale and a $231 million hack of India-based centralized exchange WazirX. The third largest incident involved an individual investor who fell victim to a phishing scam that resulted in a $55.4 million loss.

Meanwhile, roughly $30.9 million was recovered across nine incidents, lowering the adjusted net losses to around $722 million for the quarter.

Phishing remains a concern

Phishing attacks and private key compromises were the most dominant attack methods used by malicious actors during the third quarter.

Phishing alone caused losses exceeding $343 million in 65 cases. Typically, these scams involve attackers posing as trusted entities to deceive victims into sharing sensitive information like passwords.

Private key compromise ranked second, with over $324 million lost across 10 cases. In these scenarios, attackers gain control of private keys, allowing them to transfer funds without needing further authentication.

Other notable vulnerabilities involved code flaws, reentrancy bugs, price manipulation, and fundraising-related scams, among others.

Ethereum suffered most losses

Across blockchain networks, Ethereum saw the most security breaches, with 86 hacks and scams resulting in losses of over $387 million. The Bitcoin network followed, with $238 million stolen in a single phishing incident.

CertiK explained that the two top blockchain networks were the most targeted because of their “high transaction volume, large userbase, and TVL.”

Meanwhile, multi-chain platforms also suffered significant losses of around $90 million, while other blockchain networks like Binance Smart Chain (BSC), Cosmos, Scroll, Solana, Base, Blast, and Optimism accounted for the remaining incidents.
