Big losses for Facebook metaverse (Meta)

The parent company of the social networks, Meta (Facebook) has suffered a loss of $13.7 billion due to its investment in the metaverse, and this is making investors impatient.
Watcher Guru, a vigilant observer of the financial world, tweeted yesterday about Zuckerberg’s flop with these words:

“JUST IN: $META (Facebook) metaverse division lost $13.7 billion in 2022.”

Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse (Meta) lost $13.7 billion last year is what emerged from CNBC’s breaking news about the company’s accounts.

Reality Labs, Meta’s engineering division of the Metaverse brought home an operating loss of $4.28 billion in Q4.

Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, believed early on that the Metaverse was the company’s future and invested large sums in the project, which, however, are costing investors dearly as they are still not seeing the hoped-for return.

A year ago Facebook changed its name to Meta also visually charting the future of the company.

The Metaverse is now by all accounts going to be the agora of the future but for now it is proving to be a black hole absorbing the investments of Zuckerberg and co. without returns.

Reality Labs comes out of the earnings report with broken bones.

It notes that although it generated $2.16 billion last year ($727 million in Q4), profits are down sharply from 2021 ($2.27 billion).

The division that deals with the development of the metaverse seems to be in sharp decline.

Investments are six times as much as what is collected, and this definitely needs to change.

According to Predictions, Reality Labs lost a whopping $4.36 billion in the last quarter.

In this context it is worth noting Treasury yields are down sharply.

The technology sector in the stock market benefited from this situation before the close of yesterday’s session.

In the afterhours, Meta was in bull trend because of the earnings per share figure that far exceeded analysts’ expectations despite what has been stated in the past.

Another good news was the announcement of the $40 billion share buyback program.

Semiconductors are becoming available again in large quantities, which meant that the technology sector was able to breathe a sigh of relief.

ANZ Research expressed it this way:

“The positive market reaction reflects traders’ relief that there hasn’t been a hawkish reaction to the recent easing in financial conditions.”

Meta Platforms, parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp unveiled a tearful quarterly report except for earnings per share.

The communications company’s earnings per share came in at 8.13%.

Whether because it had already been predicted by the market or because of a decidedly unexpected earnings per share, the quarterly report was well received and today Meta is not lagging in trading.

Zuckerberg’s company on the Stock Exchange touches €136.14 per share, in slight decline (-0.015%).

Meta is sharply limiting corporate costs thanks to a spending review that resulted in substantial layoffs and savings of $4.2 billion.

Personnel was not the only cost item sacrificed; some offices and data centers also suffered considerable cuts with it.

Meta CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg said the following:

“Our community continues to grow and I am pleased with the strong engagement in our apps. Facebook just reached the 2 billion daily active milestone. The progress we are making on our AI discovery engine and Reels are the main drivers of this. Beyond that, our management theme for 2023 is the Year of Efficiency and we are focused on becoming a stronger and more agile organization.”

Facebook tests NFTs on profiles

Facebook also wants to add NFT support

The screenshot shows a new tab on a user’s profile, next to the classic posts and profile information tabs, dedicated to digital collectibles. Clicking on it takes you to a collection of NFTs on the profile.

One also sees a post that is explicitly marked by Facebook as a “digital collectible”.

This would therefore be an NFT-related feature, but very different from the one introduced months ago by Twitter.

Instead, it would more closely resemble what is supposedly already being tested on Instagram.

Instagram in early May had officially announced the start of testing related to new NFT functionalities, but there were no further updates on this.

It was about the possibility of publishing NFTs purchased from third-party marketplaces, and which are on the blockchains of Ethereum, Polygon, Solana and Flow.

Instagram belongs to the same group that Facebook belongs to, namely Meta, so it may be that they are testing something similar to what they are doing on Instagram.

The new service that will be offered by Instagram should allow users to link their wallets to their profiles, and then post NFTs that they actually own. It is speculated that, initially, only NFTs of artwork will be allowed to be posted.

The Facebook screenshot posted today also suggests something similar.

It remains to be seen whether the initiative will also win significant public acclaim.

NFTs on Twitter

For instance, the Twitter initiative does not seem to be gaining much traction, so much so that Elon Musk himself, the platform’s likely new owner, complained about the idea a few months ago, calling it “annoying”.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that in June, the NFT market showed a sharp decline in trading volume. It is worth noting that in May, despite cryptocurrency price collapses, NFT trading volumes had held up. It was, however, the June slumps that had a major negative impact on sales.

If Meta’s Instagram and Facebook initiative succeeds, however, where Twitter failed, this market could recover, and perhaps even surpass previous records. However, one should not make the mistake of believing that Meta’s initiative will definitely succeed.

Facebook: biggest daily capitalization loss ever

Yesterday, Meta’s stock (formerly Facebook) drop on the Nasdaq was the worst market capitalization loss ever in a single day for a US company.

Facebook, market capitalization collapses

In fact, at the opening of trading, the price suddenly plunged from around $322 at Wednesday’s close to $236, only to close the session at $237.

In other words, in a single trading session, the Meta (FB) stock price fell 26%.

The fact is that the stock capitalizes many hundreds of billions of dollars, so while -26% may not be a record, it is in terms of absolute market cap collapse.

On 2 February the market capitalization was 879 billion dollars, while yesterday it plummeted to $647 billion, with an overall loss of 232 billion dollars in a single day. Nothing like this has ever been seen on the Nasdaq in the past.

To get an idea of how much 232 billion dollars really is, it is a figure higher than the entire market capitalization of companies like L’Oreal, Verizon, Oracle, Accenture or Intel.

Instead, taking cryptocurrencies as a reference, in the world there are currently only two with capitalization greater than $232 billion (BTC and ETH), while the third is Binance Coin with $63 billion (excluding USDT).

Facebook has lost more than $200 billion of market cap today, which is larger than every single cryptocurrency except for Bitcoin and Ethereum.

To get to 232 billion you have to add up the market caps of BNB, ADA, SOL, XRP, DOT, LUNA, DOGE and AVAX.

In other words, Meta’s market cap loss yesterday is greater than the total market cap of the world’s top eight cryptocurrencies combined excluding BTC, ETH and stablecoins.

Facebook lost 232 billion dollars in a single day.

The reasons for Meta’s collapse

The problem arose when the final 2021 financial results were released.

Not only did these figures disappoint analysts’ expectations, but more importantly, for the first time in its history, Facebook recorded a quarter-on-quarter decline in the average number of daily active users.

The markets were concerned about both the lower than expected performance and the company’s future prospects, which do not look particularly good.

Therefore the future prospects of the group, besieged by more and more competitors, have clearly worsened, just like the trend of the stock price.

It is worth noting that since September 2021, a negative trend has been underway, seeing that after the all-time high of $384 at the beginning of September, the cumulative loss was 38%, well over one third.
