As it prepares to move into open beta, Immutable-based sci-fi shooter MetalCore has been making some significant behind-the-scenes changes.

The main one is the transition from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, which as well as boosting graphical fidelity, will also optimize performance, making the game more accessible to lower spec hardware.

Aside from tech tweaks, the big news is MetalCore’s switch from a series of closed beta tests to a rolling open beta program. Season 1, which is called MetalPunk Rhapsody, will go live on Thursday 12th September.

Each season will last four weeks and highlight a different example of the game’s three factions, with season 1 focussing on the MetalPunks, hence the name. This will be supported with themed content, skins and storylines. Future seasons will cover the Gear Breakers and Holy Corp.

More generally, for Season 1 developer Studio369 has also improved the onboarding flow for new players and has – of course – added new PVP bounties and missions, including 10 player PVE raids.

Other additions include the introduction of unit rarities for mechs and vehicles, which are reflected in randomized strengths, stats and attributes. Finally, progress in each season will be recorded and rewarded in a new rewards system, offering time-limited prizes.

“With Season 1: MetalPunk Rhapsody, we’re opening the game to all players,” said Matt Candler, Studio369’s CEO.

“We’ve listened to our community and delivered the features they’ve been asking for, from UE5 visuals to Barony Wars. There’s never been a better time to join the action on Kerberos.”

MetalCore is available now via the Epic Games Store, with Season 1: MetalPunk Rhapsody going live on Thursday 12th September.

Continuing to roll out its PC-based mech shooter MetalCore, developer Studio 369 recently announced a forthcoming extension to the game.

Called MetalCore Arena, it’s an idle battler in which squads of infantry and mechanized units compete in league-based matches. Players will be able to join or create leagues of up to 20 participants. Using their unit and vehicle cards, players can then set up formations for both offensive and defensive scenarios according to their opponents’ strategy.

Available for PC and free-to-play, no release date has yet been revealed.

The announcement comes at the back of MetalCore selling out four of its five vehicle NFTs mints. This latest Genesis collection marks the first time it’s sold NFTs since the original soldiers were launched in 2022. Ranging from hover tanks to mechs and aircraft, NFTs can only be minted on Immutable’s zkEVM, and paid for using MetalCore’s MCG token. Prices range from $100 to $500.

In terms of the MCG token, it hasn’t performed so well. Since launching on 28th June, its price has dropped 80%.

Immutable zkEVM-based PC shooter MetalCore is launching its third closed beta from 27th June.

Following its second closed beta, which was engaged with by 50,000 players from a waitlist of 124,000, access to this playtest is gated by via the game’s Epic Games Store key. Returning players will be provided with this, while new players can obtain guaranteed access by purchasing a founders pack.

These contain non-blockchain game assets and are available in five tiers, each of which will offer a selection of infantry, mechs, weapons, and the in-game offchain currency Shards. Shards underpin MetalCore’s entire economy, gating such features allowing players to buy cosmetics and upgrade their gear.

More generally, this playtest will introduce adhoc esports competitions which will be organised as session-based PVP modes such as domination, capture the flag, and high-value target.

Another new mode will be the faction-based PVE mission, in which players for the Holy Corporation, Gearbreakers and Metalpunks compete in terms of activity. Loyalty to these factions will also be reinforced with the launch of dedicated social hubs.

US developer Studio 369 has unveiled Baronies, its guild system which is set to roll out in Q3 2024, in web3 mech shooter MetalCore.

Baronies will enable players to band together in factions in order to climb PVP leaderboards. New leaderboards will be introduced which will offer weekly rewards to the top guilds. In terms of Barony rewards, they’ll be higher tiers and contain ultra-rare drops.

Players joining a guild will also be offered multiple other features, including the ability to speed up in-game progression, share game resources, recruit new members, rent out in-game assets, and design Barony-specific quests.

The Barony guild system has a hierarchical structure, spanning from supreme Baron leader to Ministers, Knights, Initiates and others. Being a higher tier Barony means additional privileges.

Studio 369 CEO Matt Candler commented, “With Baronies, we’re enabling gamers to create their own powerful in-game nations and forge their destiny through unity and loyalty. Only those banding together in mighty Baronies will be able to claim dominance on the war-torn battlefields of Kerberos.”

“Baronies represent a true democratization of gameplay, putting the ability to form powerful in-game factions into the hands of players themselves,” added Candler.

MetalCore is currently in closed beta. For more details about how to join its playtests, visit the game’s website and follow its X account.

Continuing to build momentum around its PC mech shooter MetalCore, Studio 369 recently finalised its Closed Beta 2 and 2.5 playtests. Alongside news that the studio recently raised $5 million in funding to support the forthcoming game launch and its MCG token, the team has also signed deals with web3 gaming networks such as Portal and Mon Protocol.

So it’s a great time to check in with Studio 369 director of marketing Hanny Duong to discuss the recent playtests, MetalCore’s forthcoming MCG token launch, future expansion plans, and more.

BlockchainGamer: How’s the feedback shaping up around your recent Closed Beta?

Duong: We hosted our Closed Beta 1 which ended early March, titled “Call to Arms,” attracting an impressive number of new players to the game. This event alone generated over 18,000 new collective MetalCore community members, as well as more than 6,000 pre-registrations.

Following that, we just finished Closed Beta 2 and 2.5 with massive growth.

MetalCore now boasts over 230k followers on X and 124,000 users on its official waitlist for early access, our Discord grew 3X and on average, players played 10 hours each, which is a testament to the fun gameplay in MetalCore.

Are you attracting web2 players yet, or is the focus on web3 gamers?

The core game will be accessible to traditional and web3 players.

Players can enjoy much of MetalCore’s gameplay without web3 elements, but building this game for web3 opens the door for true player ownership and control of their gear. We believe that gamers should be in the driver’s seat when it comes to their arsenal. Every player on the battlefield needs to optimize the best gear and kit, and web3 gives players the most options to customize their gear to their liking.

Engaging in the web3 elements of MetalCore is entirely up to you. It is not a mandatory requirement in order to play the game. The “Loot, Upgrade, Convert, Trade” loop is a key unique feature in MetalCore that leverages blockchain technology to give players control over their game items.

Every player on the battlefield needs to optimize the best gear and kit, and web3 gives players the most options to customize their gear to their liking.

Hanny Duong, Studio 369

That being said, there is no purchase necessary for players to enjoy the game. We leave players in full control of how they want to engage with the game. Whether or not you choose to engage in any web3 elements, anyone can enjoy MetalCore like any traditional game.

What incentives will you offer to build strong player retention as you move forward?

We firmly believe that fun gameplay should be at the forefront of web3 gaming and that it should feel on par with what players experience from today’s hottest titles. In MetalCore, players will take on multiple unique roles, from foot infantry, all the way to tank, aircraft and mech pilots. MetalCore is built from the ground up offering thrilling action and immersive storytelling with its dynamic mix of PvP and PvE adventure, and various game modes like domination and objective-based challenges. With its proprietary Dynamic Missions System, customizable loadouts, and vast open world, MetalCore brings unparalleled freedom and immersion. Hosting up to 60 players per server, it encourages both collaboration and competition as players vie for dominance on the battlefield.

On top of all of this, we have the benefits that can come with web3 assets, such as true ownership and the ability to trade your items freely across multiple marketplaces. This is tied into MetalCore’s “loot, upgrade, convert, trade” system, which allows players to obtain the vehicle and mech blueprints from their fallen foes through “scanning,” then create new weapons and vehicles. Players can then also choose to convert them into web3 digital collectibles, and ultimately trade them on the marketplace. Whether to engage with this aspect of the game is entirely up to the player, and not required to advance.

Furthermore, we have implemented a “Barony System” that lets players recruit others to fight under their barony’s banner and gain additional experience points and rewards. Soon, players in a barony will be able to share resources to help their allies advance and win on the battlefield. We’ll have more updates to share on what the Barony System will offer to players in another update.

Lastly, we plan to host tournaments and events with our community to keep that engagement going and build a strong relationship with our player base. We believe that when it comes to developing games, community is at the heart of everything.

To that end, we recently launched our official Ambassador Program and we look forward to continuing to expand the program to welcome new members.

What’s the reaction been to the MCG token? How do you hope to leverage this in terms of your launch plans?

The MetalCore token, $MCG, has not officially launched yet. However, playing MetalCore’s Closed Beta 1, 2, and 2.5 allowed players to earn Marks – which will be claimable for MCG token rewards during the Token Generation Event (TGE).

What can users expect from the next couple of playtests, and when are you looking to launch officially?

Right now our team is gearing up and hard at work for our next closed beta: Closed Beta 3. We just ended Closed Beta 2.5 and teased a couple of things that players can expect from CB3:

  • Session based PvP scenarios – introducing new faction based PvP scenarios with multiple objectives.
  • Faction-based social hubs – for you to hang out and connect with other players of your faction.

There will be a ton of new features that our players can sink their teeth into.

As for the official launch, we don’t have a set date to share at this moment. The focus for us is to build the best gaming experience for our players and to run these playtests during our closed betas to gather feedback, improve the game experience, and continue to ship fun gameplay features our players will enjoy.

Do you think it’s best to launch during a bear or bull market?

Regardless of market conditions, we just want to build a great game that players will love. If your game is good and it’s engaging and retaining your players, and you’ve got a happy and healthy community, then it should survive and thrive in any market as it has a sustainable model and game loop that will keep your players around for the long run.

Some web3 game developers have shifted towards mobile distribution as PC has proven insufficient and expensive as a platform for web3 games. What are your thoughts on that?

Web-based or mobile games offer an accelerated development cycle, which is attractive to developers. It also offers many benefits, such as increased accessibility, especially in APAC regions where mobile gaming is widespread.

We have a couple of things coming up for MetalCore that we’re excited to announce to the public soon.

Find out more about the making of MetalCore by checking out our recent interview with Studio 369’s CTO Dan Nikolaides, and stay up-to-date on the game via its website and X account.

On the back of its recent partnership with web3 gaming network Mon Protocol, Studio 369 has now announced a deal with multi-chain gaming hub Portal.

Currently running early playtests, Studio 369 is looking to bring new players to its PC-based PVP mech shooter MetalCore by easing the onboarding process. To this end, the developer is collaborating with Portal.

Studio 369 CEO Matt Candler commented, “We feel that bringing MetalCore into this fold will enhance the value of both products. This space is going to need AAA titles to support growth, but also the means to connect players and assets. We believe we’re at the cutting edge of building such an ecosystem.”

Another goal of the MetalCore team is to create a player-driven ecosystem based on sustainable and interoperable economies with tokens integrated into the gameplay loop, which lays the foundation for an interconnected gaming token utility.

Portal aims to serve as a central hub for web3 gaming, with features including a wallet, companion app, multi-chain functionality, a launchpad, and a native PORTAL token. Debuting earlier in 2024 at a nominal $2.4 billion valuation, the value of the PORTAL token has since plummeted 77%.

“The team here at Portal knows how important it is to have the most innovative titles available through our platform. We want players to consider us the obvious access point for their favorite web3 games. Partnering with AAA offerings like MetalCore is essential to that vision,” said Justin Taylor, a member of the Portal team.

You can find out more about the development of MetalCore in our recent interview with CTO Dan Nikolaides.

Continuing its mission to become a token connecting multiple games, including launch title Pixelmon, the Mon protocol has partnered with PC shooter MetalCore.

As part of the deal, MetalCore players will be able to complete certain quests to earn mission points that will eventually be convertible into MON token, which will enable them to participate in the protocol’s governance, as well as being integrated as a payment system in games including Pixelmon. To-date, over 1.1 million X accounts have signed up to the Mon mission platform.

In terms of the specific MetalCore integration, players will be able to complete Mon-themed quests. This is in addition to the quest system which is live during the current closed beta test, in which players can earn Marks, which will be used to claim MetalCore’s MCG tokens when they go live later in 2024.

“We are thrilled to team up with Mon Protocol to offer our combined player communities an exciting new way to engage with both virtual worlds, earning meaningful and valuable rewards in the process,” said Matt Candler, the CEO of MetalCore developer Studio369.

“This collaboration yet again highlights the immense potential of web3, allowing players to transcend the boundaries of separate game universes thanks to the unprecedented interoperability enabled by blockchain tech.”

You can find out more about MetalCore in our recent interview with CTO Dan Nikolaides.

Metalcore, innovative MMO (massive multiplayer online) combat game developed on blockchain and led by the team of experts from Unreal Engine Studio 369, Disney and Lucasfilm, recently secured a $5 million VC funding.

The funds, according to what was announced by industry experts with experience at successful film companies such as Activision, Disney, Lucasfilm, Midway, and others, will be used to add new features to the game and implement a dynamic mission system based on AI.

All the details below.

What is the MetalCore blockchain game?

MetalCore is an MMO mechanized combat game that relies on blockchain infrastructures, based on NFTs and supported by industry experts in GameFi with previous experiences in Disney, Lukasfilm, Activision, Midway and other film studios.

The game is set in a dystopian alien world where users can battle each other in real time, oversee tactical aerial skirmishes, and build their own operational war base with the aim of obtaining world domination.

Metalcore is inspired by cult products such as Warhammer and Star Wars and takes the plot and part of the fantasy setting from the vision of the artist Stephan Martiniere, who is known primarily for his work on successful titles such as Star Wars, Tron: Legacy, and Star Trekking.

Within the game, participants who fight for the conquest of territories have at their disposal a wide range of weapons, vehicles, and equipment, and can recruit pilots, develop lands, and engage in other military activities.

Player versus player clashes occur in PVP mode and sometimes enemies may be powered up by AI and equipped with large combat vehicles.

The blockchain component is sought in the use of gaming resources: by defeating an enemy, it is possible to scan a code that allows you to earn new weapons and vehicles in the form of digital tokens web3, which can then be traded on the secondary market.

Metalcore is not live yet and is expected to be launched by the end of 2024: at the moment, the blockchain to which the entire cryptographic structure will be based on is not known.

The “Closed Beta” phase has recently been concluded, fueling players’ hype for the official launch that will take place in the coming months.

It is worth noting how Metalcore won the GAM3 2022 award as the best shooter game in 2022, in addition to raising funds of 15 million dollars in the previous year

Studio 369, team of experts with experience at Disney and Lucasfilm, at the forefront of developing blockchain gaming applications

The Metalcore blockchain game is supported by Studio 369, a group of Unreal Engine experts focused on PC and console platforms, with past experiences at film studios such as Activision, Lukasfilm, Activision, Midway, and Phosphor.

The team is no stranger to producing a fantasy-themed fighting game: these individuals have in fact already worked in the past on real masterpieces such as MechWarrior 2, Mortal Combat, Gears of War, The Walking Dead, Star Trek, MechWarrior 2, Nether, Silent Hill, Outpost Zero, LOTR Return to Moria, World of Mechs VR and more.

The professionals at Studio 369, who have vertical expertise in creating interactive experiences in open world multiplayer mode, recently announced that they have obtained a $5 million funding to support the expansion of the project.

The fundraising round, which follows the one already started in 2021, was led by the participation of Delphi Digital, BITKRAFT Ventures, Spartan Group, Sanctor Capital and other important investors who will provide a substantial economic base to producers from Disney, Lucasfilm, Activision, etc.

Regarding the milestone reached with the latest VC funding, Matt Candler, CEO of Studio369, stated the following in a press release:

“We are excited to see that some of the most important companies and influencers in the gaming industry continue to share and support our vision of MetalCore. The additional funding will help us further perfect and refine MetalCore to offer the most fun, engaging, and fantastic experience.”

The allocated funds will be used not only in the improvement of the blockchain game, but also in the implementation of a dynamic mission system never seen before that leverages artificial intelligence to generate unique assignments, objectives, and tasks.

Furthermore, at Studio 369 they also thought of integrating the Immutable zkEVM ecosystem into the game, in order to allow developers to implement custom smart contracts using gasless interaction.

The studio plans to hire additional long-term partners and expand the ecosystem to millions of players.
