To support the growth of its popular browser RPG Pirate Nation, US-based developer Proof of Play has announced the launch of a second blockchain – Boss Chain.

Players of fully onchain game Pirate Nation are reportedly generating more than 2 million transactions a day, which are currently processed by Proof of Play’s initial Arbitrum L3 chain Apex. As a result, it’s reached max capacity.

With the number of players and transactions continuing to increase, Proof of Play has revealed what it calls its multichain approach, which will see the launch of Boss Chain, the first of what it’s calling “a constellation of interconnected chains”.

In regards to players, they will be able to trade assets across these chains with no bridging required thanks to marketplace interoperability.

And to mark the launch, Proof of Play encouraged players to migrate to the new chain by gifting them Boss Skins for their ships, with the allocation of 20,000 migrating players quickly filled earlier this week.

Proof of Play’s blockchain vision has always reached beyond Pirate Nation.

In a previous interview with BlockchainGamer, CEO Amitt Mahajan explained that the game is more of an experiment as part of a deeper web3 ecosystem. Indeed, through a network of chains, the developer hopes to accommodate the exponential growth to millions of players of fully onchain games. 

“To scale to any significant number of users, transactions need to be distributed across multiple chains using the blockchain as an advanced database. During my time developing Farmville, we had to manage around 64 databases to support 30 million daily active users and prevent the game from crashing. This is why Proof of Play is building the multichain – to store data and ensure seamless scalability,” he said.

As announced at the start of June 2024, blockchain gaming company Proof of Play launched its PIRATE token on 13th June. PIRATE has gained early momentum – up 170% in one day – following listings on major crypto exchanges including Coinbase, Gate.io, Bybit, and more.

More significantly, although the token could be claimed and traded immediately at launch – around 29,000 wallets have claimed to-date – 71% of claimed tokens have been staked back into the Proof of Play ecosystem. In return these holders are offered PoP points, which serve as a reward to early supporters and users of Proof of Play’s larger network of games and infrastructure.

To-date social RPG Pirate Nation is the only game released by the team, but the plan is to make multiple games, all powered by Proof of Play’s native Arbitrum-based Apex blockchain. 

To this end, users who stake their tokens at the time of claiming them, get a +50% multiplier. 15% of the total token supply was distributed in Season 1, and every three months, users can claim a further share of their allocation, with the team and investors waiting for 12 months before they can start their claims. 

Similarly to Neon Machine’s SHRAP token, the team has also introduced a “spend from stake” feature, enabling PIRATE stakers to use their tokens without having to unstake them.

Consisting of gaming veterans from Epic Games, Zynga, EA, and Activision, Proof of Play is helmed by co-founder and CEO Amitt Mahajan. 

“Our mission at Proof of Play is to create fun, accessible onchain games and, in the process, develop novel technologies that make onchain game development easier for everyone,” said Mahajan.

“The single most important design principle of the PIRATE token is ensuring Pirate Nation is made better, and more engaging, through its existence, and we are excited to offer utility while rewarding our dedicated community. We believe that Proof of Play Points are a way to recognize & reward players for their participation in the Proof of Play ecosystem.”

US developer Proof of Play has unveiled details of its forthcoming PIRATE token, which is set to launch on 13th June 2024.

Based on Ethereum, PIRATE is an ERC20 utility token with a total supply of 1 billion. Among other functions, it will be used in the developer’s turn-based browser RPG Pirate Nation to purchase gems, cosmetics and other in-game activities.

The integration of gems is scheduled to take place a few days following the token’s launch, alongside the start of Season 2. Gems will be the game’s hard currency filling various in-game purposes such as timer speed up and to cover missing resources. It can only be acquired using PIRATE.

In terms of the token launch, only Pirate Nation players during season 0 and 1, and NFT holders, will be able to claim PIRATE at TGE.

In terms of its overall distribution

• 47% of tokens is allocated to the community, 
• 28% to the team,
• 13.25% to the Proof of Play ecosystem, and
• 11.75% to investors and advisors.

In the days leading up to the TGE, the team will introduce a litepaper with more details of the PIRATE token as well as in-game utility, staking, and the wider Proof of Play ecosystem.
