Siemens and Samsung ramp up Web3 moves with digital bonds and startup investments

Two major technology companies—Siemens and Samsung—have made significant strides in the crypto sector, each advancing their involvement in different ways.

Siemens issues €300 million digital bond.

German technology giant Siemens launched its second digital bond, valued at €300 million, on a public blockchain, according to a Sept. 4 statement.

The bond, set to mature in one year, was settled using SWIAT’s private permissioned blockchain and leveraged the Bundesbank’s Trigger Solution. DekaBank acted as the bond registrar, while BayernLB, DZ BANK, Helaba, and LBBW participated as investors. Deutsche Bank facilitated the settlement in central bank money.

Siemens stated that the transaction was completed in a “fully automated manner, within minutes, and in central bank money.” It also added that the bond was issued under Germany’s Electronic Securities Act, which became effective in 2021. This law allows for the issuance of securities in electronic form, eliminating the need for physical certificates.

Meanwhile, the firm also noted that its new digital bond also supports the European Central Bank (ECB) tests of distributed ledger technology (DLT) for settling securities with central bank money.

This bond issuance follows Siemens’ debut of a €60 million digital bond in February 2023. Ralf P. Thomas, Chief Financial Officer of Siemens AG, stated:

“By issuing another digital bond, we are demonstrating once again our spirit of innovation and underscoring our aim to continuously drive digital solutions for the financial markets.”

Samsung invests in Web3 startup Startale Labs

Samsung Next, the venture capital arm of South Korean tech giant Samsung, has invested an undisclosed amount in Singapore-based Startale Labs as part of the Soneium Spark program, according to a Sept. 4 blog post statement from Samsung Next investor John Yim.

Yim explained that the firm invested in Startale Labs because they provide essential tools and infrastructure—such as Astar Network, Soneium, and Startale Cloud Services—that simplify developing and deploying decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts.

He furthered that Startale Labs’ solutions reduce barriers like high entry costs, lack of interoperability, and technical complexity, making Web3 technologies more accessible and scalable for developers and businesses.

Sota Watanabe, Startale Labs founder, stated that his firm’s strategy was “to first secure distribution channels and engage with people beyond Web3 space.” He added:

“We understand the existing problems and then explore how Web3 can address them. All technical solutions should be driven by the problems, not by the tech itself.”

Samsung records a record increase in operating profits thanks to the demand for AI chips

Samsung has reported a significant increase in its operating profits in the second quarter, driven by the growing demand for AI processor chips AI.

The South Korean company announced quarterly revenues of 74.07 trillion KRW (53.5 billion dollars), marking a 23% increase compared to the previous year and exceeding analysts’ forecasts.

The operating profit reached 10.44 trillion KRW (7.5 billion dollars), a surprising increase of over 1,450% compared to the 670 billion KRW of the same quarter last year, the highest since the third quarter of 2022.

Samsung, like other industry leaders such as Nvidia and Microsoft, is benefiting from the expansion of AI, with particular growth in its chip division.

Samsung has announced the first partner of its Web3 platform that will be featured in the TV-based NFT explorer called “The Samsung NFT hub”: LaCollection.

Specifically, the hub app is designed to enable users to appreciate world-renowned art masterpieces outside the museum space through their Samsung device with extraordinary definition and color, offering users a seamless customer experience.

Now, LaCollection’s new collaboration with Samsung reflects the platform’s commitment to bridging art and technology by offering users innovative formats through which to experience art. The app is expected to be unveiled at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on 5 January 2023.

Samsung NFT and LaCollection: connecting art through new technologies

The unveiling of the LaCollection app coincides with the launch of their second French Pastels NFT collection with the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MFA, in which they will offer a free branded NFT at the Consumer Electronics Show.

LaCollection’s mission is to connect the next generation of art lovers with the world’s leading cultural institutions, artists and collections through new technologies.

The Samsung NFT Hub, on the other hand, as anticipated, was launched in 2022 and is a revolutionary platform that enables collectors to browse, collect, and showcase their favorite art from a single device.

The Samsung Smart TV app offers users worldwide the full Web3 experience and joins LaCollection’s efforts to bridge art and technology and offer innovative ways to experience art.

Accessible art and easier shopping: the new Web3 experience

Thanks to the partnership between Samsung NFT hub and LaCollection, with an incredibly thin body, rich colors, and ultra-fine contrast, collectors can now appreciate famous works of art outside of museums in a stunning way, regarding both definition and color.

As anticipated, in conjunction with the launch of the second French Pastels NFT collection, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and LaCollection will also offer a free mint at CES 2023.

Not only Samsung, NFTs will soon appear on Facebook and Instagram

NFTs are now reaching ever-increasing peaks of expansion, so two of the world’s largest social networks have also decided to include them in their platforms soon.

In fact, we know that Facebook will support non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with a tab called “digital collectibles,” through which creators can display their work. Navdeep Singh, Meta’s Technical Program Manager, showed some screenshots of the new features on Twitter.

A spokesman for Meta, Facebook’s parent company, said the launch of NFTs on the social network would be gradual, starting with selected creators in the United States.

In the future, NFT creators will be able to cross-post between Facebook and Instagram, another Meta property. In fact, Instagram is also testing NFTs, with its Spark AR augmented reality platform.

Just a few months ago, Instagram expanded its trial of NFTs, previously available only in the United States, to international users. The app allows users to view NFTs minted on Ethereum and Polygon, and the Solana and Flow blockchains will also be supported in the future.

Meta announced in May that it would soon test NFTs on Instagram, and that Facebook would follow suit. In the future, Meta’s other apps, such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, will also get NFT capabilities.

Just like Samsung and LaCollection, Facebook, and social networks in general, are also trying to expand into Web3, as that is where the potential of the future is seen.

Samsung ready to launch an NFT ecosystem for Galaxy

Korean electronics giant, Samsung Electronics, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with six companies that will collaborate to build the Galaxy NFT ecosystem.

Samsung has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with six companies, including Theta Labs, to build a new user ecosystem for its new Galaxy, which will have increasing interaction with the NFT world.

A post on the company website reads:

“Samsung Electronics is promoting consumer experience innovation that connects non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the online virtual world to offline real benefits”.

The company said the NFT ecosystem will promote “consumer experience innovation” by connecting the virtual world with real-world benefits. Details will be announced at an event to introduce the new Galaxy Fold 4, scheduled for 10 August.

According to a report on the Korean-language news site News1, the six companies that have signed the MOU with the electronics giant would be AllLink, Digital Plaza, E-Cruise, Shilla Duty Free, Show Golf, and precisely Theta Labs. The latter is Samsung Electronics’ NFT minting partner while AllLink will be the authentication solution partner.

Samsung has been working on Web3 for some time, launching the Galaxy project, which is expected to enable unique virtual experiences for users of Galaxy products. As noted on the company’s website, on 27 July the Galaxy project was integrated with the Moonbeam platform, which integrates full compatibility with Ethereum smart contracts on the Polkadot network:

“Deploying on the Moonbeam platform is a huge milestone for Project Galaxy because it enables a new Web3 community experience for the Moonbeam and greater Polkadot ecosystems. This integration means that Moonbeam-based smart contracts and tokens can be used with the Project Galaxy platform”.

Theta Labs, the NFT minting partner

Theta Networks and Samsung had already collaborated on a digital collectibles project in February to celebrate the launch of the Galaxy S22 and S8 tablet. It is a sign that Samsung seems to be aiming ever more firmly toward the NFT ecosystem.

Theta Networks co-founder Mitch Liu explained that his company:

“is launching the world’s largest ever offline NFT utility campaign. more than 100,000 NFT holders can use their Theta NFT online and offline through ThetaPass technology. This is only the beginning, and we will continue expanding retail and ecommerce store coverage and utility to broaden benefits to Samsung NFT holders”.

Samsung gives NFT with the new Galaxy S22

In South Korea, electronics giant Samsung wanted to include Non-Fungible Tokens at the launch of its new Galaxy S22 smartphone. Basically, consumers who have a pre-order of the Galaxy S22 will also receive a commemorative NFT developed on Theta Network.

Starting in its headquarters, South Korea, Samsung seems to want to involve Non-Fungible Tokens, giving them away to its customers who have already pre-ordered the new products: either the Galaxy S22 smartphone or the Tablet S8.

These are commemorative NFTs created in collaboration with Theta Labs (THETA). On that note, CEO and co-founder of Theta Labs, Mitch Liu, commented on Twitter:

We plan to provide ongoing membership benefits and privileges to Galaxy S22 and Tablet S8 customers who own a Samsung Theta commemorative NFT and look forward to building a long-term community among members.

Customers who have pre-ordered Samsung’s Galaxy S22 or Tablet S8 can claim their NFTs by registering on ThetaDrop and applying a unique code generated through their “Samsung Members” app.

Pre-orders have already opened on February 9, and the devices will officially launch on February 25.

Samsung is taking advantage of the NFT sector

South Korea: Samsung and NFTs on Theta Network

Theta Labs is the team behind the blockchain project Theta Network and a crypto-native video streaming service called THETA.tv.

Its network is pushing into the sports and video streaming niche and incentivizes activity on its platforms through the native THETA token.

THETA ranks among the top 50 cryptos by market capitalization, priced at $3.67 at the time of writing. In the last 24 hours, the price seems to have experienced a 5% pump, perhaps due to the ongoing news.

Samsung is not the first time it has chosen Theta Labs. Back in 2019, a collaboration was announced with Samsung NEXT, the South Korean company’s venture arm, and precisely Theta Labs for a streaming platform on the blockchain.

Today, Samsung Electronics announced its 3 new TV models for 2022: MICRO LED, Neo QLED and The Frame, and for all models, the NFT platform is integrated.

Here’s how it describes the new integrated application in the post:

“NFT Platform: This application features an intuitive, integrated platform for discovering, purchasing and trading digital artwork through MICRO LED, Neo QLED and The Frame”.

So it seems the ‘NFTmania’ is not going to stop in this 2022 and electronics giant Samsung is confirming this. Its new TVs will allow users to view, choose, buy and trade Non-Fungible Tokens.
