The Sandbox, a division of Animoca Brands, has announced an investment of $20 million, reaching a maximum valuation of $1 billion, with the goal of further developing the creator economy within an open metaverse. 

This division of Animoca Brands is creating a decentralized virtual world where culture merges with the playful element, with more than 1,000 user-generated experiences and a community of over 5.7 million members.

McKinsey has predicted that by 2030 the metaverse could contribute 5 trillion dollars to the global economy. Today, games like Minecraft and Roblox are among the most popular, but they do not offer their users digital property rights.

The financing will be used to continue developing The Sandbox’s vision of a decentralized virtual world, where culture merges with gaming and the community can actively participate in growth and benefit from it. 

In line with this vision, The Sandbox will continue to improve earning opportunities for creators on its platform. 

This through the update of the Game Maker and VoxEdit 3D editor tools, the introduction of new social interactions and skills for the avatars.

Furthermore, the Marketplace on L2 of Polygon has been inaugurated, offering creators the opportunity to create and sell their digital goods. This has led to the creation of a thriving economy, with more than 11,000 unique digital goods minted and sold over half a million times.

Currently, the ecosystem of The Sandbox includes over 250 Trusted Partner, individuals and agencies trained and certified to assist brands and intellectual property holders in creating metaverse experiences for their fans.

Project Awakening, a web3 game created by CCP Games and set within the same universe as Eve Online, is accepting applications for their Phase III playtest, which is set to begin on May 21st. Taking place on a ruined world, Project Awakening allows players to build and create, leaving their very own mark on the game world.

CCP Games built a name for themselves by creating the biggest, and longest running space-based MMMORPG ever. In recent years CCP Games has expanded their portfolio, adding new, different games, all set within the Eve Online universe. One of their latest developments, Project Awakening, is a sci-fi, sandbox, MMO world that will utilize blockchain technology.

The Phase III playtest for Project Awakening begins on May 21st. It is expected that about 5,000 players will be chosen for this playtest. We don’t really know a lot about what to expect with this playtest. But we do know that Phase III will include a hackathon, encouraging players to try out the in-game creative tools.

What is Project Awakening?

Project Awakening is a web3 gaming project build by CCP, who are famous for creating and running Eve Online. And, as part of the CCP portfolio, Project Awakening will take place within the Eve universe. The game will be a sci-fi, sandbox MMORPG.

Project Awakening will have a single world that everyone lives in, set in the ruins of a decayed civilization. Project Awakening will include in-game tools that allow players to create and customize while leaving their mark on their world. Initially, players will need to work together for survival, as the world is hostile and dangerous. Other than that, we don’t really have a lot of information about the game. Hopefully some more details will come to light as their latest playtest progresses.

As previously announced, the new surreal NFT game “HACK the TAO” by Hackatao for The Sandbox has arrived.

This is a surreal game created by the famous duo of visionary Web3 artists that involves the metaverse, crypto sector, and NFTs. 

Specifically, “HACK the TAO” is a hypnotic game, set in a dream world, imagined by Hackatao, which takes inspiration from their story and their artistic journey in the crypto world. 

The goal for players will be to restore the balance of the Universe (TAO) and defeat the forces of centralization. 

“HACK the TAO” is the result of years of development, with the creation and construction of this surreal world already back in 2020. Not by chance, The Sandbox’s NFT metaverse was already talking about it four years ago on X:

Hackatao tells the story of “HACK the TAO”: the NFT game on the Sandbox metaverse

Going into more detail, the Hackatao wanted to tell the surreal story of the new NFT game “HACK the TAO”. 

However, the premise is that the player understands first who the creator is, namely the Hackatao. In this regard, the duo of artists emphasized the following: 

“Hackatao derives from the word “hacker”, meaning a person who faces intellectual challenges to avoid or overcome the limits imposed on every aspect of their life by someone or something, in a creative way, and from “tao”, the concept that indicates the balance between chaos and order, understood as a living Whole in continuous evolution.”

That being said, the two creators of the game talking about “HACK the TAO”, describing Hack Land on The Sandbox and the protagonist hero Lady Hack. 

Generally, the task of the player identified in Lady Hack will be to evolve every time they encounter the blocks that permeate a centralized world. There will also be works of art that have come to life, artists and ancient villains, and current enemies of sovereignty. 

Among the various characters, there are the PODMORKS, the cute guardians and the wise ones of Hack Land.

The Podmorks hold the key to navigate through the extravagant corridors of Hackatao’s subconscious. Some will guide the search and others will be a vital lifeline as the player fights for the world of Web3.

More hostile, instead, is the CTHULHU, the guardian of the underground world, a dangerous enemy whose spirit resides in all of us. It is said that once his call has echoed, it can no longer be ignored. The secret to defeating this enemy is to win the inner battle.

Anyway, every character in the game, friend or foe, pays homage to Hackatao’s artistic journey. 

The SAND crypto: price and trading volume

When talking about The Sandbox and its innovations as a crypto project of the metaverse, it is necessary to also take a look at the price of its native token SAND.

As anticipated, Metaversed’s ranking of the Web3 Metaverse sees The Nemesis and Sandbox at the top of the virtual worlds.

Requested inclusion of the metaverse in UK’s online security bill

During a UK parliamentary session on 12 July, members of the House of Lords discussed whether the Online Safety Bill should include “malicious content that users may encounter on services, such as in the metaverse.” 

Specifically, lawmakers examined issues related to protecting children from harmful elements online.

Some members highlighted the need to address the gap between provider-generated and user-generated content in the metaverse, which could result in inappropriate content without any specific regulation.

The central topic of discussion was whether the regulation of the UK Online Safety Act should apply to anything communicated through an Internet service, including virtual content and avatars.

The debate on the UK Online Safety Act will resume on 17 July in the House of Lords, where the final reading will take place and the bill will be voted on before any changes can be made to the text.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) used in the metaverse according to the co-founder of The Sandbox

In an interview, the co-founder and chief operating officer of The Sandbox, Sebastien Borget, seems to have come out in favor of the technology that is the fruit of the latest debates: artificial intelligence. 

In this regard, Borget reportedly said:

“With this tool, generative AI, [creators] can show and materialize ideas in seconds. It’s fantastic. The speed at which ideas can come to life has been accelerated so much. […] AI also helped to make the metaverse safer because it can moderate text in chats to reduce toxicity, for example, in a more automated manner.”

In essence, Borget wanted to emphasize that AI offers great possibilities for content creators, as well as making the metaverse more inclusive and safer.

Lately though, not everyone is in favor of the cutting-edge technology, the one behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 chatbot, indeed, some argue it is something to be feared.

The letter to block the development of artificial intelligence

Indeed, the CEO of Tesla Elon Musk, alongside Alphabet’s DeepMind researchers and other senior scientists, recently reportedly issued an appeal to “halt the development of Artificial Intelligence.” 

This is a required six-month halt that will be used to devise common rules and protections from the most deleterious consequences.

According to these thousand people, it seems that in recent months, AI labs have begun an out-of-control race to develop and employ increasingly powerful digital minds that even their creators cannot reliably understand, predict or control.

In this regard, here is what the letter says:

“we call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. This pause should be public and verifiable, and include all key actors. If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium.”

This is a real warning letter meant to highlight how AI systems at ChatGPT are becoming increasingly competitive with humans.

Despite this major stance against AI, Borget continues his interview by also arguing that AI-based tools are capable of bringing security and transparency to the NFT market.

Not only that, the co-founder of The Sandbox metaverse also described a use case where AI apps enable more expression and sentiment in content creation.

According to Borget, Artificial Intelligence stands for inclusion and safety on all fronts.
