USDC positions to be native stablecoin on Sony Soneium blockchain

Circle is looking to extend the use of its USDC stablecoin to the new high-flying Ethereum layer-2 blockchain network, Soneium, according to a Sept. 16 statement shared with CryptoSlate.

The move aims to make bridged USDC a integral token for value exchange on Soneium. This will utilize Circle’s Bridged USDC Standard, enabling the deployment of bridged USDC on Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchains. Bridged USDC acts as a proxy for native USDC held on Ethereum.

Soneium, developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs, is an Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain that launched in August. The network is designed to be a versatile, general-purpose blockchain that blends elements from entertainment, gaming, and finance.

Jun Watanabe, Chairman of Sony Block Solutions Labs, highlighted the collaboration’s potential to transform digital entertainment and finance. He stated:

“This collaboration aligns ideally with our vision of creating a more interconnected and efficient digital ecosystem. We are excited about the potential this partnership unlocks, not just for technological advancement, but for delivering tangible benefits to Soneium and users worldwide.”

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire echoed this sentiment, stating that the collaboration will accelerate the adoption of Circle’s stablecoin and blockchain technology. He said:

“This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Circle’s mission to accelerate the adoption of our stablecoins and blockchain technology, and empower creators to flourish through secure, user-friendly Web3 experiences.”

The collaboration comes during Soneium’s period of rapid growth. Just a month after its launch, the network has already partnered with platforms like Chainlink to improve its services.

Over the past months, Circle’s USDC stablecoin has enjoyed growing adoption thanks to the growth of the Coinbase-backed Ethereum layer-2 network, Base. Data from Artemis shows that its monthly transfer volume has surpassed $587 billion during the past 30 days.

Circle’s USDC is the second-largest stablecoin with a circulating supply of around $35 billion, according to CryptoSlate data.

Soneium integrates with Chainlink to advance its capabilities

Soneium, an Ethereum Layer-2 network, has joined Chainlink’s Scale program, according to a Sept. 12 statement shared with CryptoSlate.

This move grants the blockchain network’s Minato Testnet access to Chainlink’s Data Feeds and also makes the Oracle network’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) services its canonical cross-chain infrastructure.

Chainlink’s Data Feeds provide decentralized off-chain data to support various smart contract use cases, particularly for DeFi applications.

Meanwhile, CCIP will enable seamless interoperability between Soneium and other blockchains, enhancing Web3 and traditional systems integration. Over the past year, the technology has witnessed significant adoption from major traditional institutions, including South Korean gaming giant Wemade.

Soneium stated:

“With Chainlink’s proven infrastructure (having powered over $15T in transaction value), we’re ensuring that Soneium Minato can handle high traffic, support complex apps, and provide smooth onboarding for everyone.”

This development comes nearly a month after Sony Block Solution Labs introduced Soneium, which will offer Web3 technologies to Sony’s user base. Soneium aims to address real-world challenges and expand blockchain adoption.

The Chainlink Scale initiative focuses on supporting blockchain and Layer 2 ecosystems. It provides affordable access to high-quality Oracle services, which dApp user fees can eventually sustain as the ecosystem matures.

Sony Block Solutions Labs Chairman Jun Watanabe highlighted Soneium’s developer-friendly capabilities, including its ability to manage high-traffic and complex applications while ensuring a seamless onboarding experience.

He said:

“Chainlink’s industry-standard infrastructure ensures that we’re providing the best possible experience for the Soneium ecosystem.”

Similarly, Chainlink Labs Chief Business Officer Johann Eid expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration and said that Sony’s launch of Soneium positions it to lead the evolution of Web2 through the adoption of Chainlink’s CCIP as a key cross-chain solution.

Chainlink’s LINK token is up 2% in the last 24 hours and was trading at $10.55 as of press time, according to CryptoSlate’s data.

Sony Group takes plunge into Web3 with new Ethereum Layer-2 network Soneium

Sony Block Solutions Labs, a subsidiary of Sony Group, has unveiled plans to develop Soneium, an Ethereum Layer-2 network designed to accelerate blockchain technology adoption, according to an Aug. 23 statement.

The layer-2 network—a result of a collaboration with blockchain infrastructure provider Startale—seeks to bridge blockchain technology (Web3) with everyday internet services.

This project signals Sony’s ongoing expansion into the digital asset space. Sony Group hinted at launching a crypto exchange in July after acquiring Amber Japan’s WhaleFin exchange. The tech giant plans to rename and relaunch the exchange, although the timeline remains unclear.

Soneium

The network would be designed as a versatile, general-purpose blockchain with competitive features, blending elements from entertainment, gaming, finance, and other sectors.

Soneium would leverage the Op Stack and Superchain developed by the Optimism Foundation. A testnet will be launched in the coming weeks to provide developers with hands-on experience.

Several crypto protocols, including Chainlink and the Astar network, are already joining the project as launch partners. Astar said its zkEVM solution would transition into Soneium, and its native ASTR token will play a vital role within the planned layer-2 solution.

Jun Watanabe, Chairman of Sony Block Solutions Labs, highlighted Soneium’s opportunity to introduce blockchain technology to a global audience by leveraging Sony’s extensive reach across entertainment, finance, electronics, and gaming. He emphasized that Soneium will eventually integrate with Sony Group services to attract users unfamiliar with Web3.

Layer-2 networks

Ethereum layer-2 networks are designed to enhance mainnet scalability and speed and have seen sustained success recently.

Over the past year, the layer-2 landscape has become crowded with major crypto firms, including Coinbase, launching their networks and scoring massive community adoption.

As a result, layer-2 networks now handle most of Ethereum’s activity. According to available data, about 89% of blockchain transactions occur on these platforms.

However, some critics argue that this expansion could harm Ethereum in the long run. These networks have already pushed the blockchain network’s fees to three-year lows and could also potentially signal the end of ETH’s “ultrasound money” narrative.
