After many months operating under the moniker Project Awakening, game developer CCP Games has finally revealed EVE Frontier, its open sourced, blockchain-enabled game within the EVE Online universe.

As described in the whitepaper, EVE Frontier is described as being a “crowd-built virtual world and player-driven sandbox,” which is based on “cryptographic techniques and blockchain technology”, notably an Ethereum-based L2 ecosystem.

Basically, this means CCP Games is setting up the formal rules that will underpin the universe – and which will be fixed and immutable; unchangeable even by CCP – while it will be the players and other developers who will build on top of these “digital physics” rules providing their own tools and content.

In this way, CCP hopes players will gain “recognition, ownership and freedom over their own creative efforts” in a universe that will be a self-sustaining, persistent and “outlive us all”.

As for blockchain elements, there will be the in-game LUX virtual currency, which is similar to the ISK currently in EVE Online. It will be limited to transactions within the server technology running EVE Frontier, while EVE Token will be the crypto token that can be traded in and out-of-game, as well as being used for governance purpose to control the game’s future. Of course, players will also be able to create their own tokens within the game.

In terms of governance, players will band together to form Tribes, which will consists of hundreds of players. Tribes can then group together in their hundreds and thousands to form Syndicates.

It’s also worth noting that EVE Frontier will continue its series of closed playtests, with the next one occurring on Friday 27th September.

Project Awakening, a web3 game created by CCP Games and set within the same universe as Eve Online, is accepting applications for their Phase III playtest, which is set to begin on May 21st. The Phase III playtest for Project Awakening begins on May 21st. It is expected that about 5,000 players will be chosen for this playtest. We don’t really know a lot about what to expect with this playtest. But we do know that Phase III will include a hackathon, encouraging players to try out the in-game creative tools.

What is Project Awakening?

Project Awakening is a web3 gaming project build by CCP, who are famous for creating and running Eve Online. And, as part of the CCP portfolio, Project Awakening will take place within the Eve universe. The game will be a sci-fi, sandbox MMORPG.

Project Awakening will have a single world that everyone lives in, set in the ruins of a decayed civilization. Project Awakening will include in-game tools that allow players to create and customize while leaving their mark on their world. Initially, players will need to work together for survival, as the world is hostile and dangerous. Other than that, we don’t really have a lot of information about the game. Hopefully some more details will come to light as their latest playtest progresses.

Recently, Game Space, the first GameFi as a Service platform in the industry, joined Polygon and announced the launch of an NFT airdrop event for one billion Steam players. All Steam users can receive an exclusive Game Space badge of different levels according to the registration time, and the badge cannot be resold. Game Space also stated that it now supports the deposit and withdrawal of NFT assets on Polygon.

This means that Polygon will become the third blockchain network Game Space supports after Ethereum and BNB Chain. Game manufacturers can quickly and efficiently build GameFi applications and deploy NFT smart contracts on Polygon through the Game Space SDK. So what Somnium Space is proposing is a new feature of the metaverse, “Live Forever”, which will allow us to create our own avatar that reproduces our appearance, our movements, our usual tone of voice and expressions. 

In this way, the avatar can continue to live in the metaverse even after our death.

A real oxymoron from a linguistic point of view, but an achievable goal from a technical point of view.

Somnium Space is actually one of the many versions of the metaverse that have sprung up in recent years. However, unlike many of its competitors, Somnium Space is already compatible with virtual reality visors, allowing for an immersive 3D experience.

A pay-as-you-go service that does not involve selling your personal data to other companies

In order to realize its project, Somnium Space will have to register a lot of personal data for each user. This is the only way the Czech company will be able to create a truly realistic copy of the user in the form of an avatar.

The amount of data that can be recorded is approximately 100 to 300 times greater than that recorded on a mobile phone. Virtual reality technology can collect the way you move your fingers, your mouth, your eyes and your entire body and identify us quickly and even more accurately than fingerprinting.

The interesting aspect is that the company has decided to be decentralized, to build its project in a phygital universe using blockchain technology, which by its very nature guarantees complete transparency.

Avatars will “live” in their own plot of land or within their own NFT world.

After our death, the avatar will transform and continue to evolve along with the artificial intelligence technology even though all the data was collected years before.

So if the user dies, with the same amount of data and as the AI progresses, it is still possible to recreate the client’s avatar in more and more detail.

So our loved ones will be able to continue talking to us through the magic of artificial intelligence.

The first step is to start the process of registering and storing the data of those who wish to pay and participate in the “Live Forever” mode. 

Somnium Space plans to start this year, although it will limit data collection to the movements and sounds users make when they are on their own plots of land.

The metaverse then hopes to launch the first set of AI versions of its users within the next year!

It is worth adding, however, that unlike Meta, Somnium is not working on the project to monetize on people’s sensitive data.

Sychov in fact stated the following: 

“We don’t want to know your name. We don’t care who you are”. 

The company’s CEO is trying to build a more responsible business model that will help users feel safe and comfortable transferring unlimited amounts of data to the company for analysis. 

The company says it will not collect data about anyone unless the user decides to pay for the service. 

After all, if a service doesn’t charge us, it means that we and our sensitive data are the service.

The company has also stated that it will do everything in its power to make the price as low as possible. Somnium Space charged early adopters only $50 for a year’s service.

Disney believes in the NFT craze, word from former CEO Bob Iger

According to an interview with former Disney CEO Bob Iger, it seems that the animation and entertainment company (and more), believes in the NFT mania, even predicting an explosion of this market. Here are Iger’s exact words:

“We forget, in our generation, that things don’t have to be physical. They can be digital, and they have meaning to people. And as long as that meaning can be essentially substantiated in a blockchain, I think you’re going to see an explosion of things being created, traded, collected in NFTs”.

Granted, the only remaining concern in this area is, according to Iger and Disney itself, the infringement of intellectual property in the NFT space, i.e., the lack of copyright protection. To that end, Iger said:

“I went on a platform called OpenSea, which is a platform to buy and trade NFTs. And I was amazed at all the Disney stuff that was there, and most of it was pirated. Most of it was not created by people who had the right to create them”.

In mid-November, Disney reportedly launched, jointly with Veve Marketplace, its NFT collection called “Golden Moments:”, on the company’s annual Disney+Day. 

The collection features unique and original stories from Disney, but also from all the characters born from Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars productions.
