Prominent crypto market maker DWF Labs has finalized the design of its synthetic stablecoin which would be backed by a mix of digital assets, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.

In a Sept. 5 post on X (formerly Twitter), DWF Labs co-founder Andrei Grachev revealed that the synthetic stablecoin would be overcollateralized and backed with fiat stablecoins like Tether’s USDT, Circle’s USDC, and unnamed select altcoins.

He added that each asset will offer different APYs to incentivize community adoption.

Grachev projected that the asset would generate massive liquidity in the market. He said:

“Let’s imagine that just a part of altcoins FDV is a liquid stable again > people would trade like a crazy , one more chance to capture alpha or a new gem.”

This announcement comes over a month after DWF Labs revealed plans to enter the growing stablecoin market. At the time, Grachev mentioned that the digital asset would enable users to earn attractive yields without sacrificing flexibility.

While details on how DWF Labs’ stablecoin will maintain parity with the US dollar remain unclear, its launch could strengthen the rapidly expanding stablecoin sector.

Stablecoins have become one of the few crypto products with consistent real-world applications. Their stability allows traders to avoid more volatile digital assets and gives crypto users in emerging markets access to US dollars.

USDe’s decline

As DWF Labs prepares its synthetic stablecoin, Ethena’s USDe, a “synthetic dollar,” is facing a significant contraction in supply.

Earlier this year, USDe was among the fastest-growing stablecoins, drawing investors with its innovative mechanisms and high-yield potential.

However, its growth has slowed over the past two months, with its market capitalization dropping by nearly $1 billion to $2.69 billion from $3.61 billion on July 4, according to CryptoSlate’s data.

Market observers attribute USDe’s challenges to increasing competition in the yield-generating stablecoin sector. PayPal’s PYUSD, for example, has gained traction on Solana thanks to high incentives across various DeFi protocols that offer double-digit returns to investors.

On the other hand, Ethena’s once-high APY has plummeted to just 4.3%, leading to heavy redemptions from crypto investors seeking higher returns.

Russia is reportedly exploring the establishment of two crypto exchanges to facilitate foreign economic activities, local media outlet Kommersant reported on Aug. 23.

The proposed exchanges will be located in Moscow and St. Petersburg, serving as hubs for international trade.

Mikhail Uspensky, a member of the State Duma’s legislative committee on crypto regulation, stated that these exchanges will initially be available to a limited number of users. However, they will eventually be made available to major firms, including exporters and importers in the country.

Further, he noted that small and medium businesses and individuals are unlikely to gain immediate access to the exchanges. He stated:

“It is important to emphasize once again that the contours of the future experiment are entirely at the mercy of the regulator.”

Stablecoins

To support this initiative, there would also be efforts to issue stablecoins pegged to the Chinese yuan and the BRICS currency basket.

BRICS is an intergovernmental group that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. The organization aims to unite the world’s leading developing nations to challenge wealthier countries’ economic and political influence.

The Yuan-linked stablecoin is intended to reduce reliance on the US Dollar and strengthen trade agreements among BRICS member states.

Meanwhile, this development follows a statement by Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, who indicated in May that BRICS nations were considering stablecoins for financial and trade transactions.

Russia’s crypto pivot

These moves further reflect how Russia’s pivot towards crypto has accelerated since facing economic sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine.

Previously, the Vladimir Putin-led country had taken a cautious approach to the emerging industry but has made significant strides toward embracing it this year.

Over the past months, the Russian State Duma passed a bill legalizing Bitcoin mining and also began considering legalizing the use of stablecoins for international payments.

Additionally, the country has plans to advance the use of the Russian Ruble central bank digital currency (CBDC).

Hong Kong’s financial regulators said they have concluded a consultation period over a licensing program initiative for fiat-referenced stablecoin (FRS) providers.

The consultation, which ended in February, received 108 submissions from various stakeholders, including market participants, industry associations, and professional organizations.

The Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the Financial Services and Treasury Bureau (FSTB) announced this development in a joint statement on July 17.

Stablecoin licensing regime

The regulators stated most respondents agreed that a regulatory regime for FRS issuers was necessary, considering the rapid rise of drastic digital assets in recent years. They believe this will manage potential monetary and financial stability risks and ensure transparent and suitable safeguards.

Furthermore, most respondents also supported the proposed regulatory requirements and implementation arrangements required by these stablecoin issuers. The regulators wrote:

“FRS, as compared to other types of stablecoins (e.g. commodity-linked or precious metal-linked stablecoins), is considered as having greater potential to be developed as a commonly acceptable means of payment and hence poses higher and more imminent monetary and financial stability risks.”

Christopher Hui, FSTB Secretary, noted that the licensing regime would bolster Hong Kong’s digital asset framework. He also emphasized that it aligns with international standards, promotes financial stability, and mitigates losses.

The financial regulators said they will consider all the feedback in finalizing the legislative proposal for the regulatory regime and aim to introduce a bill to the Legislative Council soon.

This announcement follows the launch of Hong Kong’s stablecoin regulatory sandbox program in March. HKMA is processing applications for the sandbox, and the list of participants will be announced soon.

Meanwhile, these efforts reflect Hong Kong’s bid to become a hub for crypto innovation. Hong Kong remains one of the few regions focused on regulating the crypto industry, making it a favorable destination for industry participants.

The aggregate supply of the five largest coins peaked at over $150.874 billion on June 16 — representing a substantial increase from the $124.890 billion recorded at the beginning of the year.

Stablecoins provide a haven during periods of market uncertainty and liquidity during periods of upward price movements. The increase in their circulating supply shows a shift towards stability and risk management among investors and an overall maturity in the market, which chooses to deploy its capital through stablecoins instead of fiat currencies.

The specific changes in the circulating supplies of individual stablecoins show how market preferences shifted throughout the year.

Tether remains a dominant force in the stablecoin market, with USDT supply rising from $91.71 billion to $112.48 billion. Similarly, USDC’s growth from $24.5 billion to $32.4 billion indicates strong demand for Circle’s stablecoin.

In contrast, the dramatic decrease in BUSD’s supply from $1.011 billion to $70.421 million and TUSD’s drop from $2.310 billion to $495.710 million reflects their significant regulatory challenges and decreasing investor interest.

The fact that DAI’s supply has remained constant at $5.347 billion suggests a stable demand for this decentralized stablecoin, which could reflect a preference for decentralized financial products in the market. The stability amid fluctuations in other stablecoins’ supplies shows a balanced demand for centralized and decentralized coins, each serving different needs and risk appetites within the market.

The 30-day change in stablecoin buying power on exchanges, which has increased in the past week without corresponding inflows of BTC and ETH, indicates a significant accumulation of these stablecoins on exchanges.

This accumulation suggests that traders are preparing for potential market moves and hedging against volatility. This behavior indicates the market is in a state of readiness, where participants are prepared to deploy capital swiftly in response to market movements.

Analyzing the Stablecoin Supply Ratio (SSR) alongside changes in the stablecoin circulating supply makes sense because it provides a deeper understanding of how stablecoin liquidity affects Bitcoin’s price.

The SSR measures the ratio of Bitcoin’s supply to the aggregate stablecoin supply, highlighting the potential buying power of stablecoins relative to Bitcoin. Significant changes in stablecoin supplies can alter the SSR, indicating potential shifts in market sentiment and the readiness of capital to move into or out of BTC.

The current SSR stands at 8.6919. The SSR’s upper and lower Bollinger Bands, 10.3718 and 5.5973, indicate that it is within a stable range. Historically, Bitcoin peaked when the SSR broke above the upper Bolinger Band, and sharp drops were seen when it fell below the lower band.

This pattern shows that significant movements in the SSR can serve as an indicator for Bitcoin’s price movement, further cementing Bitcoin’s ties to the liquidity coming from the stablecoin market.

Overall, the increasing stablecoin supply, the significant 30-day change in stablecoin buying power on exchanges, and the stable SSR indicate a cautious but prepared market. Investors seem to be positioning themselves for potential volatility, relying on stablecoins as a buffer while closely monitoring Bitcoin’s price movements through the SSR.

This environment suggests a period of consolidation where market participants are waiting for clearer signals before making substantial moves.
