The market value of many NFTs has literally plummeted from the peaks of 2021/2022, but the CEO of SuperRare is not having it. 

Recently John Crain lashed out against an article that declared NFTs dead, even though it said they are completely changing. 

The collapse of the value of NFTs: the CEO of SuperRare comments

The NFT market exploded during the first part of 2021, coinciding with the first phase of the latest major bullrun, and for at least a year it was practically in constant growth. 

However, that was a speculative bubble, and it was not difficult to understand it even then. 

With the bear-market crypto of 2022, such a bubble burst, and the NFT market practically collapsed.

At the peak of late 2021/early 2022, a first decline had already followed, but it was after the implosion of the Terra/Luna ecosystem in May two years ago that the real collapse began. 

In fact, if the weekly peak of on-chain NFT trading volume occurred in August 2021, with an average of 450 million dollars daily, at the beginning of May 2022 this daily average had dropped to 265 million. 

In October of last year, however, this average had dropped even below 10 million dollars, that is, with a collapse of 98% compared to the peak of 2021. 

However, with the bull run crypto that started between October and November 2023, there was a peak rebound.

Just think that in December it had returned to almost touching 75 million dollars. However, even this rebound first slowed down, and then underwent a correction, so much so that the average daily onchain NFT trades have now dropped to around 32 million dollars. 

Are NFTs dead?

The main collapse was experienced by NFTs related to the art market, and in particular image files. 

At the peak, the NFT market had reached almost 200,000 tokens traded per day, with a total daily value of over 191 million dollars. 

Since then there has been a slow decline that has almost caused the artistic NFT market to implode, with drops of over 90%. 

For this type of digital content, a market recovery is not being observed, so it is difficult to imagine that for art-related NFTs there could be a significant recovery in the short term. 

The comment of the CEO of SuperRare on the collapse of the value of the NFT market

John Crain, CEO di SuperRare, however, does not agree.

SuperRare is primarily a market for artistic NFTs, and Crain writes on his official X profile that the tons of negativity against NFTs should be reviewed in a more general framework.

Writes: 

“People forget that we literally started from scratch six years ago, and two weeks ago on Base there were over 44 million dollars in NFT. NFTs are clearly dead.”

However, he also adds that he believes we will continue to see a change in this business model. 

On the other hand, even the incriminated article suggested a change in the business model. 

The change

The problem is that it is difficult to imagine that the current bull market of artistic NFTs can really recover. 

It is instead easier to imagine that the same NFT market could change, addressing new sectors. 

The article rightly pointed out that they are not an asset in themselves, but only a way to record on the blockchain who holds the rights to an asset. 

Their main use should be to certify ownership and authenticity, and their main characteristics should be those related to the functionalities of the blockchains, such as interoperability, secure transfer, and verification.

In short, the real asset is the underlying, that is, what the non-fungible token represents, not the NFT itself. 

The idea that by purchasing an NFT one was acquiring an asset that would appreciate over time really has foundations that are too weak to support a market like that of 2021. 

The Real World Asset (RWA)

The next step, however, should be to use NFTs to tokenize real-world assets, with the so-called RWA. 

The key point is precisely the fact that an NFT actually represents a sort of certificate of ownership, verifiable and non-falsifiable. 

The difficulty lies in creating a certain and unambiguous connection between a real asset and a token, and for this it will probably be necessary to refer to some certifying body, which very unlikely can be decentralized. 

In this form, NFTs can also be linked to the world of art, because in theory they could allow the tokenization of real works of art. 

If the RWA token market has not yet taken off, it is probably because sufficient guarantees have not yet been provided to ensure that a certain token is actually associated with a property right.

When this problem is effectively resolved, then the RWA market will truly be ready to take off. 

Speculation

Instead, what happened in 2021 is just pure speculation. 

A classic speculative bubble simply inflated, in which those who bought an NFT did so only because they hoped to resell it at a higher price. 

This kind of bubbles is always destined to burst sooner or later, even if not always once they burst, they completely wipe out a market. 

For example, in the early 2000s, the speculative bubble of the so-called dot-coms, the technology companies listed on the stock exchange that claimed to do business online, burst. With the burst of that bubble, many dot-com stocks disappeared from the stock exchanges, but some remained, and a decade later they returned not only to the levels reached during the bubble but also well beyond. 

The Amazon stock, for example, went through that speculative bubble, when in a few years its price went from $0.1 to over $5 only to drop back to $0.3 after the bubble burst, but in less than ten years it was back to $5, and after a little over twenty years it reached nearly $200. 

It is not known how the NFT market will end up, but if it evolves following the needs and desires of investors, it could come back even stronger than before, despite the disappearance of many NFTs.

Last Monday, Poseidon DAO hosted in its space the duo 1500 LABS, with whom it will officially launch its space on SupeRare on 27 February.

1500 Labs

1500 Labs is a collaboration between Debora Hirsh and Martin Gimenez Larralde, aimed at bringing their art to the NFT world. Debora, the daughter of a Brazilian entrepreneur, worked in the business field, both in the United States and Brazil, before devoting herself to art.

Martin, on the other hand, started out as an artist and from Buenos Aires, his hometown, soon moved to New York where he continued his art career and graduated with a degree in art. Both currently live and work in Milan.

The 1500 LABS project was born recently as a result of the two artists’ curiosity about the new frontier of art: NFTs.

To struck the duo was not only the technology behind the non-fungible tokens, which always provides stimuli and pushes them to explore new tools such as generative art and coding, but also the environment that came to be created around this new form of art.

A healthy, completely disintermediated and interconnected environment aimed at facilitating artists’ market entry and allowing anyone who appreciates art to become a collector.

A completely different environment from the traditional art world, where gallery owners and large institutions rule supreme.

According to 1500 Labs, the NFT world finds its strength precisely in the peculiarity of direct communication, inclusiveness and mutual support among professionals that permeate this sector.

According to the duo, a move closer to traditional art standards shows more pitfalls than benefits.

Art & Process

The art of 1500 LABS is based on transformation that produces an unexpected, harmonious, and sometimes uncomfortable aesthetic.

The creative process always begins with photos taken by the artists themselves of luxury storefronts or objects characteristic of major brands which are then post-produced, combining and deforming the images to convey a message.

Short video-loops are then created and combined with music, also produced by the duo. The combination of antique objects with modern luxury products in order to give the objects a new energy, denaturalizing them, is also not disdained.

On 27 February, 1500 LABS will open the space on SuperRare by Poseidon DAO with 5 works that are a perfect synthesis of their artistic journey: animated and music-driven video-loops in which objects from major fashion houses are completely transformed and distorted, to convey the message of perpetual change, which permeates our world.

The famous NFT marketplace dedicated to art, SuperRare, announced these days the launch of a new project entitled D3SIGN CAPSULE, created in partnership with ELLE Décoration France magazine. 

Specifically, it will be a collection of 16 NFTs created by as many architects and designers who were selected by the ELLE Décoration France team to collaborate with different digital artists who then created the NFTs.

These works will be put on display during the upcoming Paris Design Week to be held in the French capital from 10 to 18 September at the Hotel de Soubise at the National Archives at 60 rue des Francs-Bourgeois. A nice opportunity for crypto and NFT fans, who will probably already be in town for Binance Week, which is also being held in Paris from 14 to 16 September.

The exhibition will feature not only NFTs, but also the respective physical works from which the corresponding Non-Fungible Token was later created.

On SuperRare these NFTs will be offered for sale in the form of an auction in the SuperRare Space, i.e., one of the marketplace’s independent galleries, created in this case in collaboration precisely with ELLE, the famous magazine that celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.

SuperRare’s latest initiatives

Since SuperRare launched its Spaces, which are independent galleries created with brands and companies, the marketplace has often announced new projects, and this one with ELLE is just the latest in the list.

In June, SuperRare had also collaborated with Gucci to put on an exhibition titled “The Next 100 Years of Gucci,” featuring 29 different artists.

Meanwhile, these very days, SuperRare also collaborated with Tales of Us, a music group that launched its own NFT project called Anyma. One of their latest concerts was held in collaboration with SuperRare itself in New York City, where, by the way, in Soho, the marketplace has its own gallery where it organizes NFT events and exhibitions.

Publishing enters the NFT world

ELLE is not the first newspaper that has decided to enter the Non-Fungible Token sector. Before them there were Rolling Stones and the collaboration with the Bored Apes, Vanity Fair and the tokenized covers, both in Italy and in the US foreign version, Corriere della Sera, Gazzetta dello Sport, Vogue and many others.

In addition, TIME was perhaps the first to sell some articles in NFT format, selling for millions of dollars.

And there is, of course, also the magazine created by The Cryponomist as an NFT, called The NFT Magazine, a monthly magazine for sale on OpenSea about crypto art and the crypto world.

During the Metaforum conference, which was held on 13 June, attendees were able to listen to the keynote by the famous John Crain, CEO and co-founder of one of the most important NFT platforms, SuperRare.

The event, organized by Finlantern in collaboration with The Cryptonomist, was attended by more than 500 people and, given the success of the initiative, plans are already underway to organize the 2023 edition.

In any case, one of the most anticipated speeches of the event was precisely that of Crain, who had come all the way from the States to attend.

During his speech, John traced the history of SuperRare since it was founded by him in 2018, leaving his stable job at Consensys. 

During his speech, Crain explained:

“What I saw in ERC721 was the opportunity of a lifetime. That sort of thing happens very rarely and when it does it is super important and so I decided to go all in. I felt like ERC721 had the opportunity to revolutionize the economics of human creativity”.

During the startup‘s first year, SuperRare earned only $90,000, which obviously was not enough to even support a single employee. Fortunately, the team did not give up and kept working on it, until in 2020 SuperRare came to earn its first million dollars.

In 2021, SuperRare made ends meet, reaching over 200 million NFTs sold and with a token, RARE, that currently has a market capitalization of over $20 million. 

After discussing the history of SuperRare, the speech goes on to elaborate on how NFTs are revolutionizing the art world. In this regard, Crain cites a 2022 UBS study that explains that the art market is worth $65 billion, but with only 10 thousand collectors. An incredibly small number. The reason is quickly stated: little data, little verifiable data, and little information on lesser-known artists.

The art market revolution driven by NFTs

With NFTs this changes: everything is transparent on the blockchain and users can control the sale and purchase prices of each work. In addition, another important opportunity created by NFTs, as Crain explains, is revenue on every sale on the secondary market as well, which gives artists potentially lifetime earnings. 

Overall, this is a new business model for the art world, which is why NFTs are here to stay.

SuperRare and Async and the first ‘Across the Face’ NFT collection

The new “Across the Face” collection is minted on Async and will have secondary listings available on SuperRare, for its first time ever. 

Just like any other sale on SuperRare, a portion of the proceeds from secondary sales for this NFT collection will automatically go to the treasury of the SuperRare DAO community. 

In this regard, Osinachi said:

The 10 independent virtual galleries within the NFT marketplace

Last April, SuperRare announced the launch of 10 new independent and self-sufficient spaces within the marketplace to sell unique NFTs. 

These were 10 virtual galleries that were proposed and voted on by SuperRare’s DAO, involving the RARE governance token. 

At the time of writing, RARE is worth $0.27, but during the voting for the 10 virtual galleries, its price touched its ATH (all-time high) of $1.

The story of Edo Bertoglio

After graduating in directing and editing from the Conservatoire Libre du Cinema Francais in Paris, Bertoglio moved first to London and then in 1976 to New York, where he stayed for fourteen years. 

During that period he worked as a photographer with Andy Warhol‘s Interview magazine and decided to document the artistic and musical lives of the characters of the New York Downtown scene of the 1970s and 1980s, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Deborah Harry and John Lurie. 

In the same years, he became engaged to Maripol, a famous fashion designer who co-produced Downtown 81 with Glenn O’Brien.

Bergoglio then decided to return to Lugano in 1990 and today continues his work as a photographer and documentary director.

Bertoglio has decided to launch his first NFT on the most important marketplace of the moment – SuperRare.

His first non-fungible token will be one of his most iconic photographs, a unique edition of a portrait of the renowned American artist Jean-Michele Basquiat. 

This will be the first photo involved in the project: Bertoglio in fact has big plans and the idea is to create several NFTs spanning much of his past production.

The artist, working as a personal photographer for Andy Warhol’s interview, documenting the artistic and musical lives of figures at the centre of the scene in the 1970s and 1980s, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Deborah Harry and John Lurie, indirectly helped to shape a piece of New York history during the city’s artistic and cultural heyday. 

His photographs can therefore be said to represent an indelible piece of history, topical moments of American artistic life imprinted on film.

The shots have also appeared in leading fashion, music, art and pop culture magazines.

The result of the relationship between Edo and Basquiat can also be seen in the film Downtown 81, which shows a typical day of the young artist, unknown at the time, and offers an insight into the vibrant art and music community of the then downtown New York scene.

Today the world-famous NFT marketplace SuperRare has announced the launch of 10 new independently self-sovereign Spaces inside the platform itself that will sell unique NFTs. 

These 10 virtual galleries were proposed and voted on by the SuperRare DAO that launched last year with the RARE token.

Each artist will have 10 minutes to do a sketch and walk the audience through their creative process. Each show will feature artists and collectors in the NFT space.  

Serving as a bridge between the Spanish-speaking and English-speaking worlds of NFTs, The Joy of NFTs will have Latin and Spanish speakers and artists as guests on the show with the goal to educate, entertain and inspire artists and creators around the world.

Dynamo Art Factory

Dynamo Art Factory is a special project created by Dynamo Camp Onlus.  Dynamo Camp is the first Camp in Italy where Recreational Therapy is practiced.  Free of charge and specifically designed for children with rare and chronic diseases, Dynamo Camp is a member of SeriousFun Children’s Network, founded by Paul Newman. 

Since 2009 renowned contemporary artists have participated in week-long residencies at the camp, providing artistic guidance to children and their families allowing the children to search for new forms of expression and establishing an artistic practice that foster’s mental health. The NFT works offered by Dynamo Art Factory are a collaboration of the artists and our students with all proceeds benefiting the Dynamo Camp Foundation.

ForeverLands

ForeverLands represent a community of thousands of collectors. The NFT Residency offers the artists additional perks such as financial support to mint their tokens, initial minimum bid commitment and additional support provided by our partners. 

The goal of ForeverLands is to seek out true talent in underrepresented categories and communities and introduce them to the NFT space, providing them with support to make their first sales and establish a community around their work. ForeverLands aims to find the next big NFT artist wherever and whoever they are.

ONBD (Onboard)

ONBD (Onboard) is a curatorial brand and residency focused on discovering, conceptualizing and realizing NFT projects. We are facilitators, providing education combined with support to traditional artists and creators in order to bring them into the NFT space. 

ONBD works hand-in-hand with artists to conceptualize and produce art projects that are tailored to the NFT space. With a dynamic team that is both crypto-native and well-established in the traditional art world, ONBD acts as a bridge between these worlds, building a creative community that exists across both spaces. 

With access to physical gallery spaces as well as virtual galleries, ONBD helps artists realize projects or art pieces that promote a dialogue as well as interaction between artists and collectors within the WEB3/traditional art communities.
