On-chain data shows that a crypto wallet linked to the bankrupt Terraform Labs moved 1,075 BTC, valued at approximately $62.81 million, to a new address (bc1q5) on Sept. 2.

While the firm has yet to comment publicly on the transfer, market analysts note that it aligns with Terraform Labs’ plan to wind down operations following its record settlement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

After the transfer, Terraform Labs had around $2 million in various altcoins left in the wallet. According to Arkham Intelligence, the wallet holdings mainly include Convex Finance’s CVX token, worth $986,000, and the Governance OHM (GOHM) token, valued at $790,000.

Terraform Labs’ winding down

On Aug. 27, bankrupt Terraform Labs announced its plan to initiate Proposal 4818, marking the final chain upgrade for the Terra blockchain. This upgrade will implement crucial changes as the firm prepares to end its operations and support the blockchain network.

According to the firm:

“As TFL begins winding down its operations, Proposal 4818 will be the final chain upgrade that we implement. Pursuant to TFL’s settlement with the SEC and implementation of its proposed chapter 11 plan, TFL will no longer have the ability to support future chain upgrades.”

Going forward, Terra blockchain’s future will hinge on community-led initiatives, such as the Phoenix Directive.

Meanwhile, the transition from Terraform Labs to community management could significantly affect the Terra ecosystem because the blockchain network has struggled to reach previous heights following the shock collapse of its UST algorithmic stablecoin in 2022. Since then, Terra has become almost a ghost chain, with several projects on the platform struggling for liquidity.

Moreover, Terraform Labs is also selling other assets, including platforms like Pulsar Finance and Station, to meet financial obligations related to its settlement with the US regulator.

Terraform Labs agreed to a $4.5 billion settlement with the SEC in May, including nearly $3.6 billion in disgorgement, a $420 million civil penalty, and about $467 million in prejudgment interest.

In addition, Terraform’s co-founder and former CEO, Do Kwon, also agreed to pay $110 million in disgorgement, $14.3 million in prejudgment interest, and an $80 million civil penalty.

The Terra blockchain has resumed normal operations after the network implemented a temporary halt to stop a recent exploit.

Earlier today, Terra reported a security breach that led to the theft of various assets, including USDC and Astroport tokens.

The attack

The exploit targeted a vulnerability in IBC-hooks, a third-party add-on for Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) that supports cross-chain contract interactions and token transfers. Although Terra patched the issue in April, the fix was unintentionally reversed in a June update.

Cyvers Alert, a Web3 security firm, explained that the attacker exploited a reentrancy vulnerability in the timeout callback of IBC hooks.

The firm revealed that the attacker used this vulnerability to steal assets worth approximately $5 million. This includes 60 million ASTRO valued at around $1 million, 3.5 million USDC, 500,000 USDT, and 2.7 BTC, roughly $178,000 at current rates.

In response, the network paused block production at block height 11,430,400 to implement an emergency patch.

The vulnerability has been fixed as of press time, and the network Validators are updating their nodes to prevent similar exploits. Terra added:

“Validators holding over 67% of the voting power on Terra have upgraded their nodes to prevent the exploit from recurring. More validators are expected to upgrade soon.”

Astroport token declines

Despite Terra’s recovery efforts, Astroport’s ASTRO token has plunged by 62% in the past 24 hours, trading at $0.01775, according to CryptoSlate’s data.

The Cosmos-based liquidity protocol explained that the IBC vulnerability allowed the attacker to mint several tokens on the Terra chain, negatively impacting the asset’s price. It stated:

“The Astroport contributors are working with the other chains and Cosmos builders to determine what measures can be taken. We will keep you updated as we learn more.”

Meanwhile, security experts have also emphasized that Astroport wasn’t exploited, and its token “became collateral damage because it’s the only Terra token that has meaningful liquidity for stealing.”

Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milojko Spajić was an early investor in the failed Terra Luna coin and may have lost millions to the ecosystem’s implosion in 2022, according to recent court documents filed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Before becoming prime minister, Spajić was a crypto entrepreneur. In April 2018, just before Terraform Labs launched in Singapore, he invested $75,000 in the company, making him the 16th of 81 early investors. For his investment, he received 750,000 LUNA tokens at 10 cents each.

At its peak, LUNA’s value soared to $199 per token before crashing in 2022. This could mean Spajić lost over $140 million during this collapse. However, he likely sold some of his holdings and profited before the collapse.

This revelation is surprising since Spajić has never claimed to be a victim of the LUNA crash. In previous statements, he mentioned that a company he worked for was defrauded of $75,000, not his investment.

“Do Kwon is a swindler who defrauded millions, including my friends and the company I worked for, which invested in this project in early 2018,” Spajić said.

Terraform Labs is behind the algorithmic UST stablecoin, whose collapse erased almost $40 billion from the crypto market.

This discovery adds a new twist to the legal troubles of Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon in Montenegro. Kwon was convicted and sentenced for using a forged passport and is awaiting extradition to either the US or South Korea.

Meanwhile, Terraform Labs and Kwon have agreed to settle with the SEC for $4.47 billion. The company will cease operations, and Kwon will be permanently banned from the crypto industry. The company CEO, Chris Amani, also urged the community to take over the Terra blockchain, saying:

“The community will need to take over ownership of the chain. I believe there are a couple teams and devs who want to do this and you should be seeing information in the forums soon.”

Terraform Labs is already in bankruptcy, and with assets valued at around $150 million, it is unclear how they will raise the settlement funds.

The Luna Foundation Guard (LFG) has transferred approximately $95 million in crypto to a new wallet, aligning with recent plans to enhance fund security.

On-chain data from blockchain Arkham Intelligence showed that the Foundation shifted 1.974 million Avalanche’s AVAX token, valued at $71.2 million, and 39,500 BNB, approximately $23.5 million, to a new address identified as “0x13463Aab3ECcE77Cfd8Cc28fA498a5F9DB242e27” earlier today, May 31. The wallet received its initial test transactions from the Foundation on May 17.

Despite these transfers, LFG’s reserve dashboard shows that the foundation still holds approximately $161 million. This includes $71.36 million in AVAX, $45 million in UST, $23.38 million in BNB, and about $21 million in BTC, among other assets.

LFG is a non-profit organization focused on the Terra ecosystem. In 2022, the Foundation was intensely scrutinized for its Bitcoin transactions during Terra’s algorithmic stablecoin UST crash.

Why did the Luna Foundation make the transfers?

In a May 28 social media post, LFG said it was moving some assets in its multi-sig wallets to a more secure direct custody solution. It stated:

“To enhance security of LFG funds, LFG is set to transition assets held in LFG multi-sig wallets to a robust direct custody solution in the coming days.”

So, the new transactions follow the announcement and involve the wallet the Foundation previously stated.

Meanwhile, this development follows the reported agreement between the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), bankrupt Terraform Labs, and its former CEO, Do Kwon.

While details of the settlement remain sketchy as of press time, Judge Jed Rakoff has asked both the financial regulator and the defendants to submit supporting documents by June 12. In April, a US District Court for the Southern District of New York found the defunct company and its founder, Kwon, guilty of civil fraud.

Polkadot is a platform that allows diverse blockchains to transfer messages, including value, in a trust-free fashion; sharing their unique features while pooling their security. In brief, Polkadot is a scalable heterogeneous multi-chain technology.

Polkadot is heterogeneous because it is entirely flexible and makes no assumption about the nature or structure of the chains in the network. Even non-blockchain systems or data structures can become parachains if they fulfill a set of criteria.

Polkadot may be considered equivalent to a set of independent chains (e.g. a set containing Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Namecoin and Bitcoin) except with important additions: pooled security and trust-free interchain transactability.

Many of the native parachains of Polkadot will be written using a Polkadot Runtime Environment SDK (e.g. Parity Technologies’ Substrate).

he Cosmos network consists of many independent, parallel blockchains, called zones, each powered by classical Byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) consensus protocols like Tendermint (already used by platforms like ErisDB). Some zones act as hubs with respect to other zones, allowing many zones to interoperate through a shared hub.

The architecture is a more general application of the Bitcoin sidechains concept, using classic BFT and Proof-of-Stake algorithms, instead of Proof-of-Work.Cosmos can interoperate with multiple other applications and cryptocurrencies, something other blockchains can’t do well. By creating a new zone, you can plug any blockchain system into the Cosmos hub and pass tokens back and forth between those zones, without the need for an intermediary.

While the Cosmos Hub is a multi-asset distributed ledger, there is a special native token called the atom. Atoms have three use cases: as a spam-prevention mechanism, as staking tokens, and as a voting mechanism in governance.
