Bitcoin market split as buying and selling volumes remain the same

Bitcoin’s spot trading volumes over the past week show a varying level of market activity and sentiment. Bitcoin’s price saw some volatility over the week, peaking on May 25 at $69,270, followed by a slight decline and stabilization around the $68,000 to $69,000 range.

This peak corresponds to the lowest spot trading volume in the past week of $2.121 billion. This shows that the price spike may have reduced trading activity as the market awaited further price movements or reached a point of hesitation.

The intraday spot volume data from Glassnode reveals a sharp decline from May 23, with $7.780 billion, to May 25, with $2.121 billion. This significant drop in volume shows a period of low volatility and a lack of strong market catalysts, leading to a substantial reduction in trading activity.

The following days show a recovery in trading volumes. On May 27, the spot trading volume increased to $4.761 billion as Bitcoin regained $69,385. On May 28, the spot trading volume surpassed $6 billion despite a slight price drop to $68,280.

This pattern suggests that price peaks are not always followed by an immediate increase in trading activity, as traders tend to wait out the consolidation that inevitably occurs after a price increase.

Analyzing the intraday spot buying and selling volumes helps us determine the overall market sentiment. If most of the trading volume comes from selling, it shows a bearish market that’s either rushing to capitalize on sharp price movements and exit or cut its losses.

Conversely, if most of the trading volume comes from buying, the overwhelming sentiment is bullish as the market is racing to enter at current price points, expecting further increases.

Glassnode’s data from the past week reveals a market that’s almost in equilibrium. On May 23, the buying volume was $3.796 billion against a selling volume of $3.984 billion. While this would usually indicate a bearish sentiment, having these volumes so close together shows a split market with no clear directional bias.

This trend continued throughout the past week. May 24 saw almost equal buying and selling volumes of around $2.566 billion and $2.553 billion, respectively, while the lowest volumes in May showed buying at $1.032 billion and selling at $1.088 billion.

When trading volume started to pick up on May 27, buying and selling volumes continued to match at around $2.383 billion and $2.378 billion, showing a highly active trading environment with participants engaging equally in buying and selling.

The peak in spot selling volume on May 28 at $3.106 billion, compared to buying volume at $2.924 billion, suggests a slight bearish sentiment, possibly influenced by the price drop to $68,280, as traders took advantage of the price movements to sell off holdings.

Looking at the spot volumes across exchanges shows Binance consistently leading, followed by Bybit and Coinbase. On May 26, Binance had $866.776 million in volume, which increased significantly to $2.236 billion by May 28. Bybit and Coinbase also showed an increase in volumes, with Bybit peaking at $1.550 billion on May 27 and Coinbase at $774.203 million on May 28.

The significantly higher volumes on Binance, which often surpassed the combined volume of Bybit and Coinbase, can be attributed to its large user base and low trading fees, making it the preferred exchange for high-volume traders.

The balance between buying and selling volumes seen over the past week indicates that the market is indecisive and volatile.

PayPal, the digital payments giant, says it is ready to enter the Non-Fungible Token market, filing a new patent application for buying and trading NFTs.

PayPal has published a new patent application for buying and trading NFTs as the basis for the creation of its blockchain ecosystem.

In practice, the digital payments giant says it is ready to enter the NFT market, however, by creating a system where users can buy and sell NFT through a third-party service provider.

Such a system will be able to handle not only NFTs, but also splits, DAOs and royalties, through a third-party provider.

Not only that, while the text repeatedly refers to the Ethereum blockchain, there is a part where NFT trading outside the blockchain is also considered.

PayPal and NFT trading even off-chain

In the description of its patent application, PayPal envisions that NFT trading can be customized and done off-chain as well.

In this regard, here is what it says:

“Off-chain transactions could be handled within an “omnibus wallet” associated with the service provider and containing both the buyer and seller’s wallets:

Therefore, no transfer is registered on the blockchain and there is no need to broadcast the transaction to the blockchain network or pay the gas fees associated with such an on-chain transaction.”

This means that PayPal users who want to do NFT buying and trading do not have to have their own digital wallet. One solution of his would be a third-party broker that could provide a range of storage and checkout services.

Not only that, in its NFT patent application, the payments giant specifies what can be tokenized as follows:

“The NFT in this example may represent any unique piece of digital data that can be tracked using a decentralized blockchain ledger. […] Examples of such assets include […] digital images and videos, music, collectibles, and other digital art along with deeds to personal property, event tickets, legal documents and other real-world items.”

PYUSD stablecoin expansion

As PayPal is set to enter the NFT market last August, the digital payments giant launched its stablecoin PayPaul USD (PYUSD), in partnership with Paxos.

PYUSD is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network and is fully collateralized in USD USD.

Since then, PYUSD has been welcomed into the crypto market. And indeed, back in early September, Coinbase announced the integration of PayPal’s stablecoin on its platform.

Then a few days ago, Bitget’s crypto-exchange also announced the listing of PYUSD.

But as it turns out, it is Crypto.com that is taking PayPal by storm, forging a new strategic partnership with the payments giant and Paxos to emerge as the leading trading platform for PYUSD stablecoin.

In this regard, Crypto.com announced that it currently holds the largest global liquidity for PYUSD trading pairs, making it available to both its retail and institutional users.

Former OpenSea employee accused of insider trading

Nathaniel Chastain was involved in the world’s first case of insider trading in digital assets, a crime that took place on OpenSea.

Former OpenSea product manager arrested: the world’s first NFT insider trading case

NFT’s first case of insider trading has just been discovered

Yes. Insider trading does not only exist in the movies and in the world of traditional finance, imbued with fear, shouting, uncertainty and greed. From the stock market, where the phenomenon is most present, it has moved to NFTs, an area still to be explored, just like the overall blockchain sector.

This turns out to be the first-ever case of insider trading involving a digital asset.

Nathaniel Chastain, the former product manager of OpenSea, was arrested by the FBI and charged with wire fraud and money laundering in connection with insider trading of Non-Fungible Tokens.

As released by the US Department of Justice, Chastain allegedly bought a dozen NFTs belonging to a collection that was about to be placed on the OpenSea homepage. Nathaniel then allegedly exploited confidential information in his possession to make a profit by subsequently selling it for about five times the price paid.

Part of his job was to select the most promising NFT collections for inclusion on the OpenSea homepage. As a result, he was certainly in a favourable position to know well in advance the future value of the asset or even the entire collection to which it belonged.

The fact that some NFTs are added and listed on OpenSea, the world’s largest marketplace, is comparable to the listing of a cryptocurrency on major exchanges, such as Coinbase or Binance. The same reasoning can be applied to a tech stock being added to the Nasdaq 100 stock index.

It is inevitable, therefore, that at least in the short term, enough hype is created around the collection to multiply its perceived market value.

Insider trading and the charges against Nathaniel Chastain

Damian Williams, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, stated that:

“NFTs might be new, but this type of criminal scheme is not. As alleged, Nathaniel Chastain betrayed OpenSea by using its confidential business information to make money for himself. Today’s charges demonstrate the commitment of this Office to stamping out insider trading – whether it occurs on the stock market or the blockchain”.

Chastain has pleaded not guilty and could “get away” with a $100,000 bail. However, he could risk up to 20 years in prison if convicted, according to information released by Prosecutor Williams.

There is still a lot of investigating to be done, but certainly the former OpenSea employee is involved in some way. One will probably have to wait a long time to know the outcome of the case, as these types of trials tend to take years.

For now, Nathaniel Chastain has been ordered to return to court on 15 June. He will have to appear for the first time before US District Judge Jesse Furman.
