Ubisoft Labs has announced the particularly titled Captain Laserhawk: the G.A.M.E.

Based on the animated TV series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, which was inspired by Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon game — also including IP from other Ubisoft games including Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six and Beyond Good and Evil — the game is set in an alternative universe in which the US has become a dystopian technocracy called Eden and Rayman is the face of the regime.

Labelled a “transmedia gaming adventure where the community drives the narrative through innovative governance”, Captain Laserhawk: the G.A.M.E. will be underpinned by 10,000 Citizen ID NFTs, which gate early access to the game, as well as recording governance activity. They will also provide users with the ability to earn in-game currency and rewards.

And as the story unfolds, the entire community will have the opportunity to influence the plot and participate in key decision-making moments by unlocking, creating, and sharing content.

In terms of actual gameplay, Captain Laserhawk: the G.A.M.E. will be a competitive top-down shooter, while its blockchain elements will be handled using Sequence’s tech, running on Arbitrum.

Ubisoft has dropped details of its upcoming in-game character NFT mint for PC game Champions Tactics. 

Initially, The Warlords’ holders will mint is scheduled for 15th July. The other mints take place on 18th July. In terms of supply, there will be a total of 75,000 champion NFTs. Each of the 9,999 holders of The Warlords PFPs will be able to mint five champions per NFT.

The remaining 25,000 will be sold via a Dark List – 3 mints per wallet – and finally a public mint for whatever’s remaining. The mint is free, with users just paying Ethereum gas.

In response to dropping details of the mint, the floor price of The Warlords jumped 57% to $300, although remaining under its original ETH mint print. 

Leading up to the mint, Japanese gaming blockchain Oasys, which is where Champions Tactics is set to deploy, has launched a staking campaign in partnership with Ubisoft. This allows participants who stake at least 1,000 OAS tokens ($50) to double jump.tokyo or Ubisoft’s validator nodes on the Oasys chain, in addition to completing various social tasks, to be allow-listed for a free mint of a Champions Tactics NFT. Starting 21st June, the staking event closes 3rd July.

As for Champions Tactics, Ubisoft revealed new gameplay footage in April 2024, giving a glimpse into its turn-based tactical PVP RPG.

Developing a frictionless Web3 gaming experience: the union between Immutable and Ubisoft

As anticipated, Immutable, the prominent Web3 gaming platform, has made official a new partnership with Ubisoft, a major player in the game creation and publishing industry, to develop an extraordinary gaming experience that will further unlock the potential of Web3. 

This partnership is part of Immutable’s ambition to offer digital ownership to gamers, while Ubisoft continues to explore decentralization through its Strategic Innovation Lab.

The first step in this synergy will define how both companies will combine their expertise: Ubisoft will leverage its established experience in developing high-quality games, combining with Immutable’s extensive ecosystem, technology and experience in building the leading Web3 gaming platform.

In this regard, Nicolas Pouard, vice president of Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab and head of the Blockchain initiative, remarked:

In other words, this partnership represents a significant milestone for Immutable, following the successful TestNet launch of their zk roll-up gaming solution, the Immutable zkEVM, and successful demonstrations for their flagship games, including Guild of Guardians, Metalcore, Shardbound and Infinite Victory.

More news for Immutable: new games on the Immutable zkEVM network

A trio of upcoming blockchain-based games, specifically GensoKishi Online, Cursed Stone and Sailwars, were recently announced as part of the offerings on the Immutable zkEVM network.

As a reminder, Immutable zkEVM, a scalable Ethereum network that focuses on games, was built using Polygon‘s zkEVM technology and is fully compatible with the Ethereum virtual machine. 

These scalable networks enable games and other applications to handle a higher volume of transactions at a lower cost than Ethereum’s core network.

Genso Kishi Online, developed by Metap, is billed as a “native metaverse reincarnation” of the popular game Elemental Knights Online, which was released in 2008 and has reached more than 8 million downloads on all platforms to date.

GensoKishi Online was previously scheduled to be launched on Polygon’s sidechain network. 

Recently, the game held a collaborative event with Symbiogenesis, a Polygon-based game from renowned publisher Square Enix, engaging users in a treasure hunt on Discord, offering them the chance to earn free NFTs.

Cursed Stone, on the other hand, is a 3D open-world MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) that will allow players to own and trade dynamic NFT resources. 

Immutable states that an “innovative role-playing system” will ensure the uniqueness of each NFT.

Finally, Sailwars is a Web3 game inspired by both naval battles and great fantasy poems such as “Lord of the Rings” and “The Chronicles of Ice and Fire,” according to the developers. 

Players will be able to convert their game items into NFTs to trade them on the open market and earn tokens by playing in various game modes.

Other games based on Immutable zkEVM include Shardbound, Metalcore and Space Nation, a science fiction game backed by director Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day”). 

Binance launches its new Web3 wallet 

Recently, the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance, announced the launch of its newest Web3 wallet.

The new Binance Web3 wallet represents a self-contained custodian that offers users access to a carefully chosen selection of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, simultaneously enabling token exchange, earning and staking.

To participate in transactions such as staking and lending, users will first need to create a wallet using the Binance app. 

According to a Binance blog post, consumers will have complete control over their funds through the use of a self-storage wallet.

In addition, to eliminate the need to store seed phrases, the wallet will also employ multiparty computing (MPC), which splits a private key into three “key shares,” two of which are managed by the wallet owner.

Through the Binance app, users will be able to access the wallet directly and move between DeFi apps and the company-controlled exchange.

NFT in gaming, one step at a time

It would seem that loyal fans of the gaming world have turned their noses up at the idea that Non-Fungible Tokens may, in the very near future, play an increasingly important role within their beloved video games.

In an interview with Finder, however, Nicolas Pouard has been very optimistic about this. The executive argues that this small barrier created by users is, in his opinion, absolutely temporary. After all, thinking about it, changes always require a small moment of transition and readjustment.

Pouard is extremely convinced of his position, he says that the problem lies simply in the fact that players have not yet effectively grasped and internalized the infinite potential of NFTs.

According to Ubisoft, as soon as users understand that there is a chance to have full ownership over their game assets and potential gains from the secondary market, the current attitude of hostility will leave room only for enthusiasm and excitement. 

Ubisoft optimistic

The statements made by Pouard reveal that despite the fact that the company is extremely aware of the opinion that currently has a part of the gamers community, the decision was to continue with their projects. Ubisoft is carrying out the development and the construction of gaming experiences that allow NFT to cover, within the game itself, important roles.

Moreover, Ubisoft was one of the first gaming companies to learn about and experiment with the functionality of blockchain and non-fungible tokens. But that’s not all, it was in fact also the first company, from the gaming world, to build its own marketplace – Quartz. 

However, the American corporation is not the only company in the industry that perseveres and strongly believes in these new tools.

Yosuke Matsuda, president of Square Enix, has in fact released several statements in which he underlined the importance of NFTs and play-to-earn economies for the new generation of games; thus indirectly revealing his willingness to invest capital and resources in projects that will embrace this new dimension.
