Can G2 defeat WBG to get closer to qualification for the Worlds Knockout stage? Let’s see what the odds are in our preview.
WBG vs G2 – is G2 on their way to locking the top 8?
After two heated days of Worlds Swiss stage action, G2 sits with a 1-1 score. Despite the loss against HLE, however, there have been several positive signs from the LEC #1 seed, especially considering they were able to hold the LCK team for over 45 minutes and had the upper hand in certain moments of the game.
Unfortunately, HLE’s draft with a fully scaled Smolder was the determining factor and G2 will now have an uphill battle to qualify for the Knockout stage. Let’s see what we can expect from the series between them and LPL’s WBG.
Match Breakdown
The initial impression is that G2 have been playing with slightly modified team compositions compared to other top teams. In particular, the LEC team has been giving more leeway to their jungler Yike in picking up damage-oriented champions compared to playing engaging frontliners like Maokai, Sejuani, or Vi. To balance the team comps out, BrokenBlade was the one who has been having a more utility role. The rest of the team, instead, seems to be sticking well to the meta, with Yone and Rell being played twice by Caps and Mikyx.
WBG, instead, is playing more similarly to the top LCK teams. Jungler Tarzan has been on utility champions with carries in the mid and bot lane. Top laner Breathe becomes the flexible role that can either play split push or teamfight champions depending on the necessity. Crisp is known more for his enchanters rather than engage champions and we have already seen Renata pop up as an option against TL.
Overall, I would say the two teams are close if we were to compare them at peak potential. Ultimately, the main deciding factor will likely be the draft setup and whoever can utilize their strengths better. G2 will have to be more proactive if they were to run with Yike while WBG can play the waiting game if they decide to stick to their comfort picks. Based on G2’s performance against HLE, I believe there is a good chance to see the LEC #1 seed get the win and end up in the 2-1 pool.
